What to Know

Critics Consensus

Millie Alcock brings a swagger to Kara Zor-El that'd make Krypton proud in this otherwise familiar origin story, dawning a promising new hero in the DCU who's still waiting for an adventure that matches her vigor.

An enjoyable origin story for Kara Zor-El that leans into the messy emotional fallout of grief, Supergirl launches DC into a new era with cosmic force.

[Alcock] brings true pain and pathos to her performance, yet also effortlessly taps into Kara’s inherent goodness and grace with affecting subtlety. Go to Full Review

Despite the movie’s theoretical scope, its execution is painfully and frustratingly diminutive. Go to Full Review

Supergirl doesn't try to prove that superhero movies based on comics can be something else. It simply reminds us why we love them in the first place. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Supergirl is another colourful entry in the DCU, giving Milly Alcock a chance to show her film credentials. The sense of chaotic energy works but there is a lot thrown at the screen and some characters feel sorely underdeveloped. Go to Full Review

After Superman, we expected another step forward in writing, but unfortunately for Supergirl, it’s two steps back. Go to Full Review

See more Adrian King Aug 15 What weighs this film down for me is that it’s supposed to be an adaptation of the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic. While watching the movie there were several moments where I sat there judging it by how things were done in the comic versus the movie. I think that sheer fact makes me view the movie in a harsher light. The journey that Supergirl goes on in this movie takes place in three days, but in the comic their adventure spans over several months. Having the story be significantly shorter in the movie takes away a lot of time that’s used in the comic to it develop Kara and Ruthye’s relationship. By the time the credits roll, Kara and Ruthye don’t really feel like friends since they don’t have as many interactions and the interactions they do have are only so the plot can move forward. Like in the comic, Kara has a touching moment where she teaches Ruthye to wash her hands since it’s something Ruthye and her family never did since they lived far from the city and rarely bathed. It’s a small but meaningful moment because it shows Kara’s soft side, that she still cares about this girl even if she’s still unsure about going on this journey in the first place. It’s things like that I wish was included in the film. The movie being longer would’ve also developed its main villain, Krem, who feels much blander and far more generic in this movie than he did in the comic. When Supergirl and Ruthye goes to different planets in the comic, she hears about stories from civilians and inhabitants of the planets that gives us exposition on the things Krem has done and makes his presence feel more intimidating showing us just how much impact he’s had and just how dangerous he is as threat to our protagonists. In the film, we barely get any exposition on him and the Bargands. They’re just bad guys who go around doing bad shit. It’s boring. Lobo was a really great addition however, Jason Mamoa has so much fun with the role and any time he was on screen he brought a chaotic energy to the movie that only elevated it. Supergirl isn’t bad by any means, but it is disappointing as an adaptation by one of my favorite DC comics and overall the film feels downright generic as a superhero movie.
