Ravi J Nov 19 Ben Wishaw gives the performance of a lifetime in this beautiful, tragic, film. It can be tough going, but dive in, it’ll expand your compassion, your empathy for humanity. Ben Whishaw does his very best to breathe life into a banal, flat and dreary script but this film was DOA. Better continuity would at least have made it look a bit professional. Whishaw is believable and authentic as usual and the supporting actors do a good job of selling the plausability of the situations with their reactions to his antics. The film's distorted Arthur Russell-esque soundtrack is sewn cleverly into the narrative... I particular liked how it came back in just after the fight scene when the protagonist starts laughing, which created a beautiful if disturbing moment. That scene in particular drives home the character's motives- if you weren't already aware by this point in the movie: he's chasing euphoric experiences whether they are negative/harmful or not...he's laughing because he is experiencing the 'surge'(euphoria) and feeling truly alive in the moment, unapologetically, after a lifetime of self denial. I don't think this film was given enough credit- it might be uncomfortable to watch but it's genuinely well written, directed and acted. I usually hate modern British cinema but this was an exception. I will be keeping an eye out for the future work of Aneil Karia. The script is just a series of grunts and monosyllabic words, the actors are amateurish, all the characters are unlikeable and the story is banal. Every aspect of the film is so cheap. In addition the camerawork is awful, almost all of it is that shaky hand-held camera style that makes your eyes ache so that you have to look away to give them a break. A truly dreadful film.
