Based on true events, “Tenzing” chronicles the little-known story of Tenzing Norgay, a gifted Himalayan climber who, alongside New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary, was the first to summit Mount Everest. Encouraged by his wife Dawa, Tenzing finds an ally in expedition secretary Jill Henderson. Together, they persuade Colonel John Hunt that Tenzing belongs on the British climbing team, rather than merely serving it. Where Western climbers see “Everest” as something to be conquered, Tenzing reveres “Chomolungma” as the sacred mother goddess. What follows is an ascent defined as much by the tensions between backgrounds, classes and competing ambitions as by the perils of the mountain itself. But high above the world, empire, rank and aspiration fall away, leaving two outsiders bound by mutual respect and trust — and for Tenzing, the fulfillment of both a lifelong dream and a spiritual calling.

With its good-hearted heroes and pretty (but rarely breathtaking) landscapes, the Apple release is plenty likable, but also plenty forgettable. Go to Full Review

While the film could be touted as a portrait of faith and hard work, it’s also about the people who carry that dream with you. And when Tenzing reaches the top, it earns every emotion waiting there. Go to Full Review

Instead, while you might, like me, give it a firm nod of approval, it never quite earns the rapturous reception its subject deserves. Go to Full Review

The film may not conquer every dramatic peak it attempts, but in finally placing Tenzing Norgay at the centre of his own Everest story, it makes sure history’s camera is pointing in the right direction. Go to Full Review

Tenzing may tell a remarkable story about a remarkable man, but the film struggles to resonate emotionally. It’s competently made, well-acted, and beautifully shot, yet something is certainly missing from Tenzing Norgay’s ascent to the big-screen. Go to Full Review
