Kate J @RT61159718 Apr 27 This film promises a touching story of two misfits—an elderly recluse and a foster kid—bonding over a boat project. However, the execution is hampered by plot holes and forced conflict. While Abner and Ricky deliver solid performances, they are too charming to feel like genuine outcasts. Abner’s supposed mental health struggles are barely visible beyond a brief mention of medication; he seems well-liked and social, only "persecuted" by a few kids on bikes. Similarly, Ricky is labelled a "troublemaker" with a dark past in foster care, yet he presents as perfectly well-adjusted. It is entirely unconvincing that Abner and Ricky’s uncle would instantly believe Ricky vandalized the boat just because of paint in his hair, especially given the known local gang of bullies. The daughter’s decision to report Abner to the authorities remains baffling and poorly explained and the cousin’s sudden change of heart, feel rushed and "lame." It's a wasted opportunity that lacks edge. 3 stars max. Second ending part little boy hides in boat. I was thinking crap better turn boat around before he get in trouble for kidnapping boy, well no cause movie ends no one looking for "brown boy" 🤨 is it me or would movie end differently if boy was not brown? Maybe an amber alert ?! The film could have been fantastic. The characters are interesting and the actors are good, yet the story just completely falls flat.
