Alison Z @MeaningInCinema 2d Amazing visuals of the set/mansion that are beyond breathtaking. I personally love this movie. I watched it as a child and continue to love it. The nostalgia plays a huge part in my love for it, but it is worth a watch. Just don’t come in expecting the plot to be super on point. Growing up, I loved the plot, and thought it made a lot of sense, now I see it has many missing pieces such as character development and follow up. As a remake, it strays so far from the 1963 original that it feels like a completely independent film, which I expected, so I can’t say I was too disappointed. In fact, I genuinely liked it. It’s not great, but it entertains me throughout its two-hour runtime and never becomes boring. Narratively, it’s richer, with more subplots and layers, though it loses much of the reflective depth and ambiguity that made the original so compelling. The tension between the rational and supernatural is weaker, and Eleanor’s emotional complexity is far less effective here. The horror also feels more exaggerated, fantastical, and direct, losing the subtle psychological fear of the original. Still, the visual presentation is striking, the house remains captivating, and despite weak character writing—especially Dr. Marrow—it works as decent commercial entertainment, even if it lacks the mystery, elegance, and depth of the classic.
