As supremely talented as everyone involved is, the depth beyond the visuals is lacking.

While The Nutcracker and the Four Realms may not be the holiday staple it wishes it were, it's certainly not a film to avoid.

Despite the malnourished story, the film is still worth watching for Mackenzie Foy's grounded performance, the eye candy of the wondrous settings and the presence of an extremely committed and infectiously enjoyable Keira Knightley.

Though I liked the idea of a young girl with an interest in engineering, the integrated cast, and the ballet showcase, surely Disney can produce classic stories with more depth and feeling in ways that reflect their considerable resources

There are a lot of problems with The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, but perhaps the biggest is its inherent inessentiality. There's literally no reason for this movie to exist.

Not sure what we're supposed to expect from a dark, girl-power, Disney-brand sort-of sequel to The Nutcracker, [but] 'Helen Mirren fighting hussar Terminators with a bullwhip' isn't a key third act element that leaps immediately to mind.

Screenwriter Ashleigh Powell has radically changed the original story, aiming to give it a modern kick which jives with the zeitgeist, and the result is imaginative.
November 29, 2018
Ashleigh Powell's adaptation feels like Alice in Wonderland-meets-The-Chronicles-of-Narnia (with a hint of Labyrinth) as a grieving young woman finds empowerment (and herself) in battling fantastic forces.

Knightley's Sugar Plum cannot elevate an entire movie on her translucent wings. The flick's promise is quickly drowned in its artificial simulation of emotions.

It's lovely to see a film make bold choices, such as including ballet performed by the remarkable American ballerina Misty Copeland, as both a tribute to its origins and a novel way of telling the story.

As mass-market confection, Nutcracker certainly works well enough, though its delights definitely hark more from style rather than story.

A lovely escapist adventure that is magnificently brought to life by incredible production design.

Younger audiences will enjoy the bright colours and fun energy but it's unlikely to leave a lasting impression. Sometimes, that's enough. But don't expect it to become an instant favourite.
November 21, 2018
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms offers spectacular special effects, awe-inspiring costumes, parades, and the stunning dancing of Misty Copeland to songs by Tchaikovsky.

Perhaps if you can disconnect your brain, there's something there, but it takes an awful amount of work to get there. [Full Review in Spanish]

Considering the number of script doctors this must have had, it's a little amazing that not one of them noticed how deficient the bones of this thing are.
November 18, 2018
It's sweeping, visually comprehensible, and has a nice tactile, sensuous quality.
November 16, 2018
Overblown Hollywood enhancing, embellishing, riffing, and too-much-ing on a known classic, with every imaginable thing plus the kitchen sink, and CGI on top of CGI. Like too much Christmas candy, it'll make your teeth hurt.

With few jokes and one-dimensional characters, The Nutcracker remains a tin soldier - pretty, empty, echoing, and indistinguishable from its peers.

Everything that is wrong with the film is embodied by its titular character: there is nothing to learn about why he matters at all. Save the sugar, just crack a nut or two next time.
