Critics Consensus

Reinvigorating an ancient adventure with majestic sweep and sterling work by its colossal ensemble, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey imbues myth with primal human feeling.

Audience Says

A cinematic epic fit for the biggest screens, The Odyssey proves with technical precision and unrestrained grandeur that there’s no filmmaker quite like Christopher Nolan to steer Odysseus’ voyage home.

Like the filmmaker’s last work, ‘Oppenheimer,’ ‘The Odyssey’ has a downbeat, apocalyptic bent—but, unlike ‘Oppenheimer,’ or any previous Nolan film, the new film is also centrally about what human beings owe one another. Go to Full Review

Nolan’s Odyssey is stylistically cohesive in good ways, grounding the fantastical in a human era that looks pretty rough even on the royal plane. The episodic narrative flows nimbly, despite a certain grandeur of overall arc is missing. Go to Full Review

"The Odyssey" lives up to its reputation and cements Nolan’s reputation as the master of bold moves. It’s a stunner that deserves the three hours it takes to unfold. Go to Full Review

[Nolan's] adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey isn’t entirely faithful, but it doesn’t have to be. It’s a lush, expansive reinterpretation of what war, violence and conquest does to human civilisation. [...] an absolute beast of a film. Go to Full Review

Layne M 1d Film of the year. Outstanding from start to finish! See more Andrew 1d I left five minutes in because my ears were in pain. I don’t know who set the volume but it felt like they were trying to destroy my hearing. Also AMC theaters waste a half hour of your life before starting your movie. And we wonder why people don’t want to go to the movies anymore. See more Amanda Huggenkiss 1d 70mm is just how Nolan intended it to be seen, highly recommend if you can. Antinuous was a coward. See more Saroj 1d Beautiful cinematography. Absolutely worth watching. See more Will F 1d I enjoyed it, didn’t love it. The music wasn’t memorable (Nolan’s movies usually have amazing scores.) I believe the production of this movie was more impressive than the final product. I wish I could have seen it in Imax. See more Jorge 1d Amazing experience for my first movie in 70mm IMAX See more Read all reviews
