In a near-future society, The Running Man is the top-rated show on television--a deadly competition where contestants, known as Runners, must survive 30 days while being hunted by professional assassins, with every move broadcast to a bloodthirsty public and each day bringing a greater cash reward. Desperate to save his sick daughter, working-class Ben Richards (Glen Powell) is convinced by the show's charming but ruthless producer, Dan Killian (Josh Brolin), to enter the game as a last resort. But Ben's defiance, instincts, and grit turn him into an unexpected fan favorite--and a threat to the entire system. As ratings skyrocket, so does the danger, and Ben must outwit not just the Hunters, but a nation addicted to watching him fall.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Spiritedly sprinting through grim source material, Edgar Wright's The Running Man doesn't live up to the director's high bar for inventive action extravaganzas but maintains a slick stride.

Audience Says

Though a bit of the source material’s thematic heft is softened here, The Running Man still delivers a high-octane, gripping ride supercharged by Glen Powell’s irresistible charisma.

The filmmakers should be grateful that Powell is running as fast as he can while carrying their dead weight. Go to Full Review

Wright juggles dystopian thrills, satire, sentiment, and slapstick, but never nails any of them. The result is a genre mashup that feels more muddled than masterful. Go to Full Review

Strikes the ideal balance between staying faithful to the source material and capturing the tone audiences loved from the 1987 film. It is energetic, cheesy, and gloriously over-the-top in all the best possible ways. Go to Full Review

Perhaps our bias for the 1987 version has overtaken the more novel-accurate version Wright gives us, and while this remake is certainly entertaining, it lacks something to make it really stand out amongst the rubble of similar dystopian films. Go to Full Review

It’s fast, it’s fun, it’s often funny; but when it comes to the more biting satirical elements... the crowd-pleasing film doesn’t quite pass the finish line. Go to Full Review

BRENT SIMON Jun 14 It started out pretty cringe, but then got better and turned out to be an ok action flick. See more Eric Mar 7 Better than first by far See more Jordan Feb 14 Plot was a bit all over the place. Also, the relationship with the girl at the end was kind of a waste. The Schwarzenegger version was better. Even if it was a little campy. Kind of a shame cause I really like this actor. See more Read all reviews
