In need of a vacation from his ordinary life, factory worker Douglas Quaid visits Rekall, a company that can turn dreams into real memories. Thinking that memories of life as a superspy are just the ticket, Quaid undergoes the procedure -- but it goes horribly wrong. Suddenly, Quaid is a hunted man. Done right, Total Recall should be a glorious mash-up of genres; The Truman Show-meets-Blade Runner. As it is, this is sci-fi without ideas, and a thriller completely bereft of thrills.

It's impossible not to compare this with the original Schwarzenegger film. Aside from Colin Farrell being a poor substitute for Arnold, this version doesn't even mention Mars, let alone have it as the location for any part of the story. As a stand alone movie it has enough action to maintain some interest. I thought Jessica Biel was head and shoulders the best actor in the film. Kate Beckinsale was unconvincing. I don't know why it was made, it didn't add anything to the original or to science fiction film in general. Nothing is sacred. I expect that there will be a remake of Blade Runner next. Sadly I couldn't give it even 3 stars as it really had no plot.

I recently watched both this, and the original, back-to-back. The latter version had its moments but really could not compare to the novelty of the original, including the subtle humor. "Consider it a divorce!"
