When the beautiful and scandalous Molly Stevens (Magda Miller) is found strangled to death near the British village of Oakley Park, Scotland Yard superintendent Mike Halloran (John Mills) is brought in to investigate the murder. Hostile to outsiders sticking their noses into their business, the townspeople react coldly to Halloran's questioning. The dogged policeman soon uncovers a series of lies and deceptions centered on the town's upper-crust social club, which could ruin many reputations.

Martin B Jan 29 I swears cars came far to close to people a couple times in that movie. Anyway there wasn't a bad actor in the bunch. Coburn was always terrific and John Mills convinced me completely that he was a dedicated yet unlikeable detective who stuck to his guns and got it right in the end. The ending was a little disappointing for me as I prefer the sleuth to use guile to solve the case. Also denouement and camera angles went a bit awry. But apart from those minor complaints, entertaining movie.
