Dec 5, 2012 I usually don't like this kind of movies but this one was an exception, Bleak & Stunning without annoying cliches & preachings that are common is this kind of movies, Another great movie from the director of The Tin Drum See more Mar 21, 2010 Beautifully shot in the amazing Kazakhstan landscapes but it is hard to have compassion for the main characters. Schlondorff certainly did better flicks. See more Jan 29, 2010 Ulzhan is damn weird. I loved it at the VCU French Film Festival in 2008, and I've been trying to see it again since. You find yourself wondering what it is--film noir? Magical realism? Spy story? Pilgrimage? Man versus nature? It starts with a man in Kazakhstan clearly having problems with his identity as he sheds passports and belongings and heads across the steppes on foot. On the way to a storied mountain using what he claims is a treasure map, he is joined by nomadic spirits who want to know what he's really after. It's hard to compare this to another movie, but it's got a few gists in common with the quirky existentialism of I Heart Huckabees. See more Aug 31, 2009 Luved the film... Torreton was very convincing, Ayanat Ksenbai is very beautiful and played well as-well for her 4th film...in french! See more Mar 14, 2009 A stunning road movie about humanity. The story is pretty slender but it's full of ideas and works at a number of levels, from damaged humans to the damaged environment.
