It almost goes off the rails in the last 30 minutes as it gets a little hokey and metaphoric but still entertaining, just not as much. See more 10/19/2008 Very bleak portrait of a widowed court official in Shanxi province, China who deals with women due to be executed. The film follows her and the husband of a woman she has executed. Cinematography is great at showing the cold bleakness of the area and the lead performance by Dan Liu is great but I found the unrelenting depressiveness of the story a bit too much and the ambiguous ending a bit annoying. Expected a bit more variety in emotional tone from the director who wrote the lovely "Shower". Nice score though. See more Read all reviews
