Critics Consensus

Though its approach to complex social issues can be somewhat myopic, Bombay Begums benefits greatly from its strong cast and willingness to engage in the first place.

While it gets some of the micro elements well, the bigger picture is a bit of a let-down. It's like some parts of the machine might be well-oiled but it is otherwise dysfunctional. Go to Full Review

Bombay Begums covers a lot of ground. The compact and cogent series, directed by Shrivastava and Bornila Chatterjee, gets its soul from the spirited performances of the leading women. Go to Full Review

Bombay Begums is a cohesive, albeit formulaic show that manoeuvres all the possible themes urban women of all ages and social strata face on a daily basis. Go to Full Review

Hemant S 06/13/2023 Just a note upfront – for people, mainly my compatriots who think some content is too explicit for their eyes; don't watch it. If you think your children shouldn't watch it – use your parental controls. With that out of the way, "Bombay Begums" is a well written tale of five women in Mumbai – each from different walks of life and journeys of their own. Struggles with marriages, careers, fidelity, adolescence and survival in a city that can be as mean as much as it is an oasis for making a living. Rani (Pooja Bhatt) has made it to a position of power in an investment firm and is now fighting off demons and vultures out to grab her pot of gold. Shai (Aadhya Anand), her teenaged step daughter struggles with peer pressure and discovery of sensuality, while holding on to the shadows of her dead mother and still unable to fully accept Rani as a mother figure. Fatima (Shahana Goswami) is a middle manager in Rani's firm, yearning to make a family but also discovering her talents and career growth. Can she be a mother and a top executive, managing high pressure projects? Or rather, will a patriarchal society with rigid norms allow her to? Ayesha (Plabita Borthakur) new to the city, is a fledgling in her career and in her travails discovers more about herself than she might have planned to, while she handholds Lily (Amruta Subhash), a prostitute through a financing initiative to start her own factory and business. A street smart woman molded by the city, Lily knows when to grab an opportunity, but also holds a kind heart and a very clear mind. Each of the characters are well formed and naturally portrayed by the actors. It is essentially a story about women and how they try to forge ahead to form an identity and achieve their dreams. Aadhya Anand is a brilliant young talent, and it's nice to see Pooja Bhatt back in a rough edged role. Amruta Subhash does what she does best in playing a gritty character. Infidelity is a reality; it is a vice, but not deeming piercing judgement. And nowhere does this story imply empowerment by adultery or glorify it – if anything it shines a light upon the importance of liberty, freedom of choice and open mindedness. Watch it with an open mind and you will surely see a passionate effort by everyone involved in materializing it.
