The fact that the eight protagonists are pretty much relentlessly petty, stupid and childish makes it hard to invest in any of them.

Dunham has always been a better dramatist than she is a humorist, but this leaves you fearing she has almost no sense of humour at all. A waste.

It was like drinking a flat, tepid lager shandy when you could have been having a row of Balkan vodka shots.

A show like this should be a tussle: between viewer and character, between love and hate, between enjoyment and pain. Camping could be nastier still, but at least the fight is there.

...more of a mixed bag, but nowhere near such a big deal, and that's a good thing for everyone concerned, including viewers.

The trouble isn't that these people are unlikable. It's that they're not unlikable enough.... And Camping isn't bad either, necessarily, it's just filled with a kind of empathy that's rather out of place.

Garner's character receives the most significant development of the bunch, and even she's two-dimensional at best.

Instead it drags, hitting the same notes about Kathryn's obliviousness and self-dramatizing, and it starts to feel like a long weekend indeed.

The inherent truth of that theme, and the casting, ultimately don't provide enough incentive to muster much enthusiasm for Camping. Even at the Groupon rate.

Another perfectly serviceable series about awful people, but not a special one.

Camping is in the running for the worst U.S. version of a successful British series since Coupling.

A very funny, quasi-cringy series that takes the Sartre-esque point of view into the great outdoors, "Camping" involves people who really should know better than to spend a weekend outside with other people.

Garner's good but Camping is bad.

Camping isn't fun to watch at all. By all means, watch it just to see a misfire take shape.
October 12, 2018
A camping trip you'd never want to take, with people you'd never like to meet, doing things you're almost embarrassed to watch.

There are moments when "Camping" feels a little pointlessly misanthropic, and others where it just feels random. In the middle are a few laughs, a few good performances and a little bit of that "Girls" sense of humor.

I just wish it were possible to get more of a consistent kick out of Camping, which boasts laugh-out-loud lines and enjoyably boisterous work from its cast, but too often, is grating instead of darkly funny.

"Camping" delivers an annoying character who is anything but amusing. She made me cringe, yes, but only because I couldn't wait to get away from her to go do my laundry and wash the dishes.
October 11, 2018
Fine actors, one and all, saddled with playing caricatures who have one or two thinly drawn storylines apiece.

Camping all in all is less fun than waves of dive-bombing mosquitoes. Hell, even a good ol' baked bean-infused fart-fest around the campfire would be a welcome diversion.
