September 3, 2019
Despite those momentary bright spots in an ongoing bleak collection of fates, Carnival Row largely meanders through the world of its own making.

Reanimates bits and pieces from different branches of the fantasy genre into a glum and lumbering beast that only occasionally sparks into life.

As a piece of fantasy fiction, this is rich and engaging... As a piece of political commentary, its messaging seems to sit in the centre of the story without either dominating it or turning it into a piece of preachy theatre. It's nicely balanced.

Carnival Row, whether airborne or down-to-earth gritty, keeps flexing the power of its oft-breathtaking visuals. The worlds it creates are the greater sums of its whole while the messages it sends can be a little two telegraphed.

Too crass to care about, too serious to take seriously. Still, for all that, it is a solidly crafted creation with only the set designers working even harder than the leads.

What keeps the drama from flying completely true, in spite of all its beauty, is that it falls short of its obligation to utterly enthrall the audience with its stories as well as its glamour.

World building is hard enough, but as circus acts go, Carnival Row is like a juggler on a unicycle. It's kind of interesting to watch, but nobody really needs it.

It's hard to get immersed when the show keeps making obtrusive parallels to everything from English rule in Ireland to American abuses at Guantanamo Bay.
August 27, 2019
Like many a silly novel, it is a shambles, but an enjoyable one, and as long as you're up for some full-throated groans you'll be rewarded with a long, messy, and satisfying distraction.

As it lurches from crime story to sci-fi/fantasy, star-crossed romance to politically relevant social drama, Carnival Row has a hard time developing its strengths.

If you're not into fantasy, that probably seems a real hodge-podge of mythos, but Carnival Row succeeds precisely because it's different (and looks expensive while creatively employing its CGI).
August 15, 2019
That's a story that's been told before, far more ably, and far less reliant on simple shock to make its point.
August 15, 2019
At times, the mythology can feel needlessly complex, but there is something truly endearing about Carnival's earnest, irony-free storytelling.
