Critics Consensus

Curb Your Enthusiasm returns after a long layoff with a batch of episodes that continue to mine fresh - if not particularly groundbreaking - misanthropic laughs.

Critic Reviews for Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 9

All Critics (47) | Top Critics (22)

We've seen just how ugly and cringe-worthy Larry is when he compulsively acts out his impulses. He's a funny, clever take on how not to act.

But there's a difference between irreverence and ignorance...Blasting away at "political correctness" isn't so funny anymore, because people are educating themselves about the harm ingrained biases do.

Jun 13, 2018 | Full Review…

Despite a six-year gap between Season 8 and Season 9, Larry David's attack on uncomfortable social customs felt right at home in 2017. Some things never change, and David is certainly one of those things.

The new Curb was oddly determined to make a splash when David might have been better advised to stick to what he is best at: everyman umbrage, delivered with a sigh and a grimace.

Terribly abrasive, blissfully misanthropic stuff.

Jul 29, 2019 | Full Review…

It's great have an old friend back, even better to see he's still the best part of his own joke. It's also reasonable to wonder whether that joke has grown just a little bit stale.

The Curb brand of comedy became even more important, more relevant.

Curb Your Enthusiasm has been on fire...and the finale is no exception.

Jun 13, 2018 | Full Review…

One might consider it odd that Curb Your Enthusiasm came back after so much time with essentially the same show, but it's actually quite refreshing that it did, as the approach stays true who Larry is.

Jun 12, 2018 | Full Review…

Nothing but laughter. Uncomfortable situations, monumental anger, a circular narrative structure and no tapujo. Pretty ... pretty ... pretty ... good. [Full Review in Spanish]

[Curb Your Enthusiasm] ends its ninth season delivering what we've always liked about it, but with a sense that comedy is struggling to find its footing in this new terrain

Aug 28, 2018 | Full Review…

By including plot lines and characters that make the audience aware of cultural change since it was last on the air, the show feels dated even though it's obviously trying hard not to be.

Audience Reviews for Curb Your Enthusiasm: Season 9

  • Nov 05, 2019
Curb is just barely fresh. It's a step off par from years past.
  • Jun 25, 2018
Years later, Larry David has somehow managed to keep this show just as funny as the very first episode.
  • Mar 11, 2018
meibe it is the long six years passed since last season. i really don’t know. but unequivocally, this season is not at all comparable with the others. if you think at epic episodes like the palestinian chicken, you almost are incapable to recognise the same signature. really really poor, extremely weak in the scripts, even if is almost totally improvised. i waited anxiously 2.000 days and now i got a dvd which is not good even for my fireplace. everything they did is awful predictable and infinitely sad. i suggest to the ex great larry david to pass his very creamy elderly years in a rest home for lobotomised persons.

A show running out of steam... sadly.
  • Feb 03, 2018
Any show by Larry David is not only unique but gives a fresh perspective on the little, humorous things in all of our lives. Relatable!
  • Jan 01, 2018
Damn Larry still has some great humor to give us. I was pleasantly shocked the show has meat with gravy.
  • Dec 26, 2017
Craziest season so far!!! Please Larry don't make us wait for too long for next one!
  • Dec 18, 2017
I love curb but this is not my favorite season. the first thing I noticed was susie essman and richard lewis both have had major work done on their faces since last season. The fatwa theme seems somehow dated: irrelevant, disappointing. Still I watched every episode as it aired and then binged on the whole season again. It's better than most tv - just not as good as it has been.
  • Dec 18, 2017
This show is prettttttty prettty pretty pretty amazing.
  • Dec 12, 2017
Curb returns with it's long awaited ninth season, and while the first half of the season proves to be pretty weak and trying way too hard to be classic Curb comedy, the second half turns around and provides some truly great moments and a satisfying conclusion that make this season a welcome return. 3.5/5 stars
