Critic Reviews for David Makes Man Season 1

All Critics (20) | Top Critics (8)

The surrealism of David Makes Man channels McCraney's out-of-body experiences to wrenching, lyrical effect: Even when the show ends, the quiet grace of its protagonist hovers over the viewer.

Right from the start, there's a distinct rhythm that'll hook you; a tonal confidence that's as rhapsodic as it can be calm.

One of the best things about David Makes Man is how it gives us access to the inner thoughts of its characters, often through their daydreams, but also though imaginary figures or even scrawling text on the screen.

Simply wonderful and stirring.

David Makes Man has growing pains. But at its best, it's a beautiful coming-of-age story about a black teenager, the people who want him to live up to all his promise, and a country that doesn't seem to have room for him.

Along with McDowell's disarming vulnerability, these lyrical passages give David specificity and dimension.

McCraney's gift as a storyteller is to get inside the pressures faced by young, specifically young black men and enable the audience to intimately understand why David makes the choices that he does...

The story of David is pretty complex all by itself; with some of McRaney's artistic flourishes, though, he really brings the viewer into the mind of David, who really wants to break out of his situation but is scared he never will.

Audience Reviews for David Makes Man: Season 1

One of the best shows I have seen in a long time! McCraney will capture you right off the bat with a personal look into David's inner turmoil and conflicts between his reality and the life he wants for himself, his family, and his community. I am blown away and will definitely keep tuning in. We need more shows like this!!!

The cinematography is good. The character's and plot have not been established very well. I feel that the audience is trying to figure out what the catch is. IS this kid seeing visions, is he paranoid, etc. Then what ever he may be why is this important. I think that many are falling for the expectations for this show and not what it actually delivers.

Wow! Incredible! The acting, casting and directing is superb. This is storytelling at its best as it pulls the viewer in 100% . . . Oprah has hit this one out of the park! After two episodes am totally hooked. This is the real deal!

Only reason I didn't give this a full five is because I've only seen one episode. A truly cinematic piece of socio-political commentary, with powerful characterisation. Took like twenty minutes to have me in tears.

An absolutely great eye opening show that gives teens and adults a better understanding of what some kids go through in the country.
