Dollface: Season 1 (2019)

Season 1
Dollface

Critics Consensus

Dollface has all of the right parts: a talented cast, a promising premise, and plenty of surreal intrigue -- if only its shallow vision of feminism didn't undermine them.

Critic Reviews for Dollface Season 1

All Critics (22) | Top Critics (10)

This is a great cast of women, trapped in a series made by a bunch of obviously talented people who will almost certainly go on to make smart, funny, daring, bold things. This isn't one of them.

Nov 13, 2019 | Full Review…

Every possible rough edge of gender, sexuality, race and class has been sanded off of these characters and this story. Yet Dollface stays consistently watchable and even its familiar punchlines often hit thanks to this cast.

Nov 13, 2019 | Full Review…

That's really the heart of it: Dollface, despite its centering of female friendship, committed performances and genuinely good grasp of satirical wellness terminology, often doesn't seem to have much of one.

It has its flaws and imperfections, but it's a strong and light-hearted depiction of female friendship and seeks to show the importance of maintaining other relations beyond romantic relationships.

Nov 25, 2019 | Full Review…

Dollface features a few good performances and flashes of insight, but it offers a largely shallow vision of women's relationships.

Nov 20, 2019 | Rating: 2.5/5 | Full Review…

Intended as a modern comic spin on Ibsen's A Doll's House, Dollface is funny enough, though it mostly misses the feminist boat... But as long as you watch to be entertained rather than woke, you'll be fine.

Nov 18, 2019 | Full Review…

Despite the familiar territory, Dollface works largely because Kat Dennings and the core cast are such a joy to watch.

Dec 6, 2019 | Full Review…

It's a smart and funny comedy that wants to explore women outside of relationships, and does so with success.

Nov 15, 2019 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

"Dollface" would be better off if it didn't try so hard to prove its feminist credentials. It's plenty relatable, refreshing, and hilarious without these flailing attempts.

Nov 18, 2019 | Rating: B | Full Review…

Dollface failed to make me care about these women or their relationships - and with so many other great female-driven shows to choose from, I'm happy looking for a new bestie elsewhere.

Which isn't to say that the show is bad, it's just not, well, good. It's average. It's surpassingly average.

Nov 26, 2019 | Full Review…

Though it boasts a terrific cast that amplifies Dennings' droll comedic stylings, the series, from creator Jordan Weiss, becomes a winner thanks to willingness to get surreal.

I loved this fresh and empowering series and I felt a real connection with the characters, all of the actors play their characters extremely well. Overall I would highly recommend.

I think it was really funny and most other viewers are overly sensitive. This show is not supposed to be taken seriously. It's funny!!!! Laugh.

Love this show!! Season 2 please!

I could barely get through one episode. It MUST have been written by a man with all the sexist cliches (i.e. all women must go to the bathroom together, all women are completely devastated when a man breaks up with them). But even worse than that it's just not funny. At all.

I really enjoyed this show! This also has a great cast and guest stars.
  • Dec 05, 2019
Personally, the only thing I find shallow about the show is people's interpretation of it. The over the top personalities and comical sketch scenes are indicative of Jules' unfamiliarity with the "world of women", and each character portrays a different trope too often assigned to women by society and the media. As the season progresses and Jules becomes more comfortable and close to her female friends, we begin to uncover the true personalities lying underneath these aggrandized personas. In addition, the show is not only hilarious, but also beautifully designed, from the sets to the characters. The colors and stylization make it an absolute pleasure to watch.

I enjoyed it very much I found it funny and entertaining.

The tv show version of elevator music. At most could be used for background noise if you're cleaning your house, just don't listen too carefully.

This show is hilarious and very creatively written. I love how it takes everyday situations and gives them new meaning. Overall it has really great writing, acting, and directing! And it's not only for women. It's insightful for a male audience too. I was laughing and hooked within the first minutes of episode one. I can hardly wait for seasons 2, 3, 4, and 5 through ten! Thanks Hulu!
