It's usually crude, often maddening, sometimes plain baffling. Also horribly addictive.

The delicious period drama returns, and is even more grandly addictive.

Downton Abbey is a soap opera, albeit one that appeals to people who would never willingly admit to an appetite for soap operas.

Watching Downton Abbey remains a treat worthy of blankets and biscuits and rapt adoration. Its shortcomings merely take away some of the polish.

Those Downton fans who waited impatiently for season two will be more than amply rewarded.

This is a production that reminds people of the rarefied air PBS can occupy, creating a stately showcase for elegant and (let's face it) older-skewing material.

We are again cosseted in the warm glow of incredible talent impeccably used, on display in its gem-studded cast, gorgeous sets and costumes, and often moving, always unobtrusively witty script.

Downton Abbey looks for all the world as though it's steaming steadily toward happy or at least contented endings for one and all. So be it -- and so it should be.

For those of us who hungered for a year to witness these new chapters, the appetite is insatiable

It is both an absorbing costume drama and an intriguing story of reality intruding on a fantastic way of life.

The new series vibrates excitingly on many frequencies, but it specially resonates as a rare hybrid of domestic drama and shelter porn.

Written with sterling wit and a flair for declaratives, it's easy to imagine that Downton Abbey is some sort of sly critique of aristocracy, satire of the new gilded age, or brave examination of conscience and class.

The first two or three episodes of the new season are magnificent and even better than all of the first year of the Emmy-winning show

The good news is that the indomitable Maggie Smith is back as the dowager countess, who not only gets all the best lines, but also knows what to do with them.

Much grimmer, grayer and (gasp) dowdier. Still mostly wonderful.

There's no denying the show has aspirational fantasy as its hook: I've even heard the Crawleys compared to the Kardashians. But I prefer to think of Downton as an experimental take on Fiddler on the Roof.

This time around, the series comes off as a shameless throwback to itself.
June 29, 2016
The series seamlessly moves between the horrors of war and the gentility of life in the show's titular 100-room manor.

Downton Abbey was the best TV show of 2011 and give or take Mad Men it could also be the best show of 2012.

The show, which shifts shape between comedy and drama, is less about the sensational moment than about the texture of the relationships.
