Hemant S 06/13/2023 A very straight-forward, fictionalized story based on true events, Hache is unapologetic about it's passionate style above anything else. The Spanish series follows Helena, a struggling mother living in Barcelona of the '60s stealing scraps and pick pocketing to survive and keep her daughter fed. On one of her escapes, she stumbles across Albatross, a club run by Malpica, a white-collar drug lord who lays his sights on Helena and takes her under his wing. Mutually charmed by each other, their meeting ignites a chain of events that thrusts Helena aka Hache (H) into a game of lies and deceit, to stay alive and reach the dazzling heights of wealth and power, at any cost. While she sets out on this path, Vinuesa, a grief stricken cop who is escaping his tragic past watches them like a hawk determined to apprehend them. The series has been trough two seasons and includes a set of colorful supporting characters, including Aristedes – a loyal friend and henchman of Malpica, who forms a special bond with Hache – one of the most beautifully depicted relationships I have seen in stories of late. Adriana Ugarte as Helena gives the character apt fire and shine, subtly reminiscent of Walter White from "Breaking Bad", while Javier Rey and Eduardo Noriega (as the mafioso and cop respectively) back her up with strong portrayals as well. Marc Martinez as Aristedes is excellent though, in a layered but convincing character arc that catches you by surprise. Not really everyone's cup of tea, as the characters seem to make decisions based on impulse, passion and survival more than pragmatism. But I personally never found a dull moment in the story.
