Critic Reviews for Marvel's Luke Cage Season 1

All Critics (71) | Top Critics (23)

There are excellent performances, lots of engaging references and the odd good scene or line, but overall it lacks substance, reality and grit.

If people take to Luke Cage it will be for the cast.

This may be Marvel and Netflix's best effort to date.

One of Luke Cage's greatest triumphs is its use of music, which resonates more prominently and energetically than in any previous Marvel screen property.

Sluggish story compared with Daredevil and Jessica Jones, but Colter and cast are first-rate.

Luke Cage... [is] strong and easy to root for.

Jun 27, 2018 | Full Review…

As a character, Luke Cage may have indestructible skin and a rock-solid frame, but as a show, Luke Cage has those very same characteristics.

Oct 31, 2018 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

It can be a tough act to balance, and seeing him navigate those treacherous waters is what makes Marvel's Luke Cage a great fixture to follow, even more so for its progressive and inclusive nature.

Aug 28, 2018 | Full Review…

Everything about the show is nothing short of extraordinary.

Aug 25, 2018 | Full Review…

I honestly can think of no TV show that has given as much room, as much attention, as much love to black women as Luke Cage.

Aug 3, 2018 | Full Review…

Every so often, Cage expresses ambivalence about violence, or wonders whether the collateral damage of his war with Stokes is worth it. These are reasonable questions, but the series reflexively and repeatedly dismisses them.

Audience Reviews for Marvel's Luke Cage: Season 1

I wanted to like it. It just falls flat. The Luke Cage Character that we met in Jessica Jones Season 1 was great, this version got all woke and let us down.

Recently been on a binge of the Marvel Netflix shows again since the original airing of them. Not gonna lie, Luke Cage did not hold up as well to me. I think the first few episodes are great but (SPOILER ALERT) as soon as Copperhead dies the show basically does. Mariah is an awful villain with no depth and the seen where she kills Cornell is maybe the goofiest and most awkwardly acted scene in all of the Marvel Netflix shows (yes including Iron Fist). That being said Mike Colter is great and fits the role perfectly, if not for that I think the show would be mostly forgettable.

This tv show was very good, I really loved it for story, moral and characters.

This needs to be a movie and also it's something I can watch doing Black History Month it was a lot of Education goodness

Awesome action, and an excellent two villains.

Mike Colter's Luke Cage is charismatic, strong, complex, and sexy. He is surrounded by a great cast (standout for me was Simone Missick and Mahershala Ali). I was especially grateful for several interesting, complex, and strong female characters. Some say the story is drawn out, but I felt like there was enough story for several seasons - Luke takes care of the antagonist but then another comes forward. Huge bonus points to the awesome music - it can't even really be called the soundtrack because it's centre stage (literally) so often.

This is carried primarily by the lead actor's charismatic performance. Some good supporting work, especially by Alfre Woodard. If there had just been a little more story, less filler (a problem with most of these Marvel Netflix shows) this might have been great instead of just OK.

great show mike colter is great as cage and you can really get invested in its story
