Critics Consensus

Although this sleek summertime soap oozes melodrama, Melrose Place struggles with one-dimensional storylines and shallow characterizations.

Critic Reviews for Melrose Place Season 1

All Critics (16) | Top Critics (9)

I just can't get into a show in which the main dramatic device seems to be a male star coming to the door shirtless every 10 minutes.

Jun 18, 2019 | Full Review…

The characters are all gorgeous androids, their life- styles witless L.A. cliches.

Nov 29, 2018 | Full Review…

Locklear lifted the entire cast - she even managed to draw something resembling an emotion out of Shue - but the show was hers, pure and simple.

Jan 8, 2019 | Rating: B | Full Review…

Script burning: a metaphor for Melrose Place.

Jun 18, 2019 | Full Review…

Shameless, but not bad.

Jun 18, 2019 | Full Review…

Melrose Place is a perfectly packaged product. Its pitch is persuasive because it does not threaten or provoke by giving us a version of reality. In that fashion, Melrose Place succeeds.

Jun 18, 2019 | Full Review…

Melrose Place was everything a soapy drama should be. Eventually it turned ridiculous, but that first season it was glorious.

Jun 18, 2019 | Full Review…

Melrose Place is best remembered for its soap opera trashiness, extravagantly dark storylines...none of which was a part of the show's DNA until Heather Locklear showed up.

Jan 10, 2019 | Full Review…

Melrose Place has become a symbol of Generation X and its desire for material wealth and professional success.

Jun 18, 2019 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

It's glossy, but it's certainly not superficial.

Jun 18, 2019 | Full Review…

It's not good enough to match up to other shows on TV now and it seems positively dated. Nostalgia is about all it's good for.

Jun 18, 2019 | Full Review…

The clothes are silly, the slang ridiculous, and the irony absent.
