Modern Love really feels like it would have benefited from less tidiness, less ponderousness - maybe even, dare I say, a little less New York Times-iness.

It's a pro job, though at times it feels professional in a Madison Avenue kind of way, as if you are being sold something, rather than told a story.

What does it tell us about love and New Yorkers? That there is no amount of money Amazon won't throw in order to bring some synthetic sub-Nora Ephron/Woody Allen cutesy-cute blah to its offering.

Modern Love had the chance to build upon the Times' original essays, but to its detriment, the show adapted them as faithfully as possible, yielding mostly dull interpretations.
October 23, 2019
Modern Love is at once empty and retrograde. Its stars, and viewers, deserve better.

There is plenty of earnestness afoot, even when it's lurking just under the surface, and there are a few happy endings, too.

A steady rain falls in each vignette - but in keeping with the romanticized vision of Modern Love, it's a Hollywood-style rain, the kind of rain that makes everyone and everything look better.

You'd groan if that particular fantasy weren't so potent. There's no question that Modern Love is often ridiculous; love is like that.

Modern Love could be about more than love. At its best moments, and in its best episodes, it is about more than that, but it's almost as if those moments escape from a show determined to keep them hidden away.
October 18, 2019
Modern Love refreshingly bypasses the clichéd concept of love as an all-consuming force we need to find in favor of tracing that affection to its primary source: ties between people.

"Modern Love," when it works, provides the kind of soothing comfort supplied by an inviting armchair, a warm fire, or a mug of hot tea on a chilly night.

It's A-list and painfully classy, but over eight episodes it only rarely lifts off, and instead settles into an oddly bland, will-this-do middle ground.

Despite its varying trials and travails, Modern Love strives for an overall feel-good vibe that isn't always entirely earned.

Do you like Tina Fey, Anne Hathaway, Julia Garner or Catherine Keener? You can join any of them on a fairly involving journey exploring love and self without having to keep your backside glued to a cushion for more than 30 minutes.

Watching "Modern Love" is about as much fun as listening to a New Yorker complain about not being able to find a good bagel or a decent slice. Like I said, it's a hate-watch.

Not every installment works, but enough of them hit that narrow but satisfying target of being sweet but not overly saccharine. It helps that the actors are so good.

Modern Love isn't bad, but it doesn't have many smart things to say about modernity or love. It's mostly trite and retrograde.
October 8, 2019
It's not that it's hard to want these people to find love. It's that it's way too hard to believe that these characters trading stilted dialogue vaguely shaped like banter are actual people.

Almost all the choices in Modern Love are the right ones. It's a simple, endearing collection that makes for compelling television.

With its jazzy score and heart-tugging mix of romance and yearning, Modern Love feels like vintage Woody Allen - without all the creepy baggage.
