"Payment Required" leaves us in the hands of a creator more than capable of delivering on his promises and with a vessel of actors who deliver that vision flawlessly.
The execution of Mr. Robot's flights of fancy varies and I still can't figure out whether this Darlene excursion works. Nevertheless I appreciate the boldness.
There are so many unanswered questions right now, but Mr. Robot Season 4 is firing from all cylinders. Any episode that has Whiterose tearing down the Christmas tree he just decorated in a fit of rage is a success in my book.
"Payment Required" is a quieter hour, and one which is almost exclusively focused on the Alderson family.
It's worth noting that this episode has some genuinely funny moments despite its focus on grief and trauma.
"402 Payment Required" does a masterful job of fluctuating between dread and optimism, between shades of the paranoid thriller and more emotional family drama.
Adding additional layers to an already complicated plot is tricky business, of course. But the mysteries are so intriguing, and Esmail's command of his craft so sure, that the investment seems sound as a pound.
A solid episode of Mr. Robot ended with the biggest rug-pull the show has done since its freshman year, and it wasn't even a single tug.
