Peaky Blinders: Series 5 Reviews

October 14, 2019
The Season 5 finale is a departure for the show, which generally wraps up with one of Tommy's unlikely, brilliant plans working out precisely the way he'd planned, or close to it.

A season that steps into the quicksand of the Great Depression... clearly makes a door-kicking-open return to wonderfully portrayed gangsterism.

Never mind the substance, feel the style. Roll on season six and, most likely, seven.

Twenty nine episodes in, Peaky Blinders proves it can still pack a punch.

Peaky Blinders has been one of the best dramas the BBC has produced in recent years and, for all the suspension of disbelief it demands of the viewer, the finale was still brilliantly exhilarating.

Peaky Blinders is back and it is still the coolest show on television. Brace yourselves for six weeks of existential dread, revisionist history, stylish visuals and some seriously hammy Brummy accents.

The series is undoubtedly stylish, indeed with too many stylistic tics for its own good, but the characters are really nothing more than violent thugs.
September 3, 2019
Many of the show's trademark visual gimmicks are starting to look tired and self-parodic.

But if you're in, the return of Peaky Blinders was a murky joy, its dark set-pieces a delicious relief from the bank holiday heat.

Again, Paul Anderson as Tommy's bawling, brawling, semi-animal older brother, Arthur, filled the screen every time he appeared, never more so than when being humiliated by his wife.

Visually stunning and crammed full of compelling performances. Cillian Murphy is simply phenomenal as Thomas Shelby.

You don't just watch this show, you have to tumble headlong into it and submit to the freefall.

As much as I hate to say it, the Peaky Blinders finale was a let-down. But perhaps we shouldn't be too surprised that the big climax was a bit of a damp squib. The truth is the whole of season five was on the underwhelming side.

A bit superficial and absolutely gripping.

This series has seen a much needed return to form, helped by Arthur going back to his mad old, bad old ways and the presence of genuine evil in the character of Oswald Mosely (Sam Claflin, terrific).

It's a towering, mythic drama that looks good, sounds good, and never reveals a trace of timidity or a bead of sweat. Five series in, Peaky Blinders knows exactly what it is -- the coolest show on TV -- and exactly how to be it.

[T]he sensuous logic of the music helps propel the attention of the viewer past the simplicity of the plot, which dispenses justice as if it is but a game of chance.
