It almost made up for all the half-baked villains this series. Except you, Tess, you were a joy.

In the end it was pretty great television. There was just too much of everything.

Look. Let's be real. This finale wasn't handled well.

Poldark is one of my comfort-food shows, an easy, pretty, and transporting escape to a time and place, the 18th century, where everything was simpler - or, thanks to the writers, everything seemed simpler.

Whilst this wasn't perhaps Poldark's best (or, at least, most consistent) outing, the last five minutes in particular were as fitting an ending to the show as any.

We're obviously delighted to see her and Drake approach a happy ending, and Ellise Chappell and Harry Richardson have been brilliant throughout, but it does feel rushed in comparison to other storylines.

Grownups love this ripping, soapy series...

This season gives fans exactly what they want from Poldark: love and drama. It's sad to see it end, but all good things must come to an end. Still, thanks to streaming services, you can watch it all again.

Over its five seasons, the series had a lot going for it, not least the potent chemistry between Aidan Turner's Ross and Eleanor Tomlinson's Demelza, but the plotlines increasingly became so implausible as to be downright daft.

Poldark left the show's seven million devoted viewers dangling...it was brilliantly bonkers...

Beneath the ruffles and wigs (Turner's glue-stained curls in this season have been abominable) are stories with real heart, and characters we can fall in love with again and again.

The Poldarks have grown so middle-aged that I predict later in the series Ross will surprise Demelza [Aidan Turner and Eleanor Tomlinson] with tickets for a two-week Mediterranean cruise.

Rars, the landscape of mind is just as important as the landscape of action, if not more so, and I hope and pray the rest of this series recognises that. But welcome back anyhow. Yes indeed.

Costume drama at its most spangled and superficial, Poldark is bursting at the seams with simplistic fashion statements.
July 17, 2019
[T]he death of Elizabeth leaves a hole in the plot where the thwarted lust used to go, which is a worry, because nobody wants to hear more about the travails of Poldark's tin mine during a fancy-dress recession.

The plot goes its own way, and it's perfect

The hubble, bubble, toil and trouble is coming along nicely.

A toast then, to the new century. What do it hold for us? Just seven remaining Sunday nights of Cornish joy. Relish them.
July 16, 2019
All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable start to what's almost certain to be an emotionally draining but hugely entertaining final run.
July 16, 2019
It's silly, eye-roll-inducing and the perfect farewell.
