M. Night Shyamalan's disturbing new thriller Servant on Apple TV+ is much more than a haunting tale about a mysterious nanny and a grieving couple. Servant does an excellent job making the viewer paranoid throughout.

Like all creepy movies and TV shows, Servant uses its unlikely story to plumb real-life terrors. In this case, it's anxieties about what parenthood does to us, and particularly to women.

We're not expected to believe any of it, but [M. Night] Shyamalan and his team make the premise vibrate with a disturbing sense that we could.

Placing time and distance between each episode may mask the sad discovery that very little happens in the first season of Servant -- certainly not enough to justify more than a two-hour jaunt into upper middle-class ennui.

Like us, Julius can't resist opening doors better left shut, listening to conversations better left unheard and seeing things one can never un-see.

The show quickly picks up and becomes a rather big surprise for Apple's streaming platform.

Servant has the potential to carry through on its promise. But the aesthetic identity established by Shyamalan in that first episode is strong.

Servant has much to commend it... But it is never... remotely scary. Creepy, yes. Atmospheric, always. Unsettling in general. But so little actually happens that the series drags.

Seemingly inspired by Rosemary's Baby, there's no recovering from the worm-ridden nature of its concept, which starts off fuzzy and weird and doesn't get much clearer over time.

Doesn't seem to have the emotional curiosity to earn its premise.

There may be places where the story begins to droop, but, if we are to judge a psychological thriller by its ability to worm its way into our psyche, then "Servant" certainly performs its duties.

It's eerie and unsettling in ways that television often tries to be but rarely accomplishes.

Right from the outset Servant brings surprises that keep the viewer wrong-footed. It also retains a delicious ambiguity.

By bucking the trend of bloated runtimes and unnecessarily long seasons, Servant proves that it's a great thriller, not in spite of its short runtime; but because of it.
November 27, 2019
The show unravels its story through its brisk half-hour episodes by maintaining the aforementioned delicate balance, and rewarding patience with deep character growth.

Thereby hangs a dark tale.
November 26, 2019
For all of the plot's shortcomings, moment-to-moment Servant is a delight with a surprising amount of laughs to share.
November 26, 2019
Servant starts off with creepy atmosphere to spare. The problem is that it doesn't have nearly enough story to fill 10 episodes, which means that all that spare atmosphere gets used up well before its five-plus-hour running time is over.
