The actors bark lines like "Solid copy on that!" and "Take the shot!" while Trevor Eve turns up at the end with an American accent, which can only add to the fun.

It's odd how murder, terrorism, murky geopolitics and the arms trade are considered the ideal ingredients for glossy international entertainment co-productions, but that's where we're at.

Though hiccups and growing pains are evident on the screen, the series still knows how to deliver terrific action sequences and that should be enough to keep longtime fans around as this latest iteration figures itself out.

Audience Reviews for Strike Back: Retribution

  • May 30, 2019
This is not the show it once was at all. The new cast pales in comparison to the original cast. The villains are laughable, they go out of their way to insert feminist agenda scenes and make all men seem like toxic dummies. Its just sad.
  • May 01, 2019
What in the hell ... the men are all portrayed as useless hacks and the ladies save the day everyday. Doesn't reflect real operators, in the least, just see the pass rate for operatives in females. And frankly, you're going to upset your fan base that might watch this kind of television to get away from the SJW world.
  • Mar 07, 2019
While it takes an episode or two to get going, and Reynolds is a weak link, the rest of the series settles into a great groove giving us some great new characters and numerous memorable action sequences.
  • Oct 24, 2018
Wyatt and Mac try so hard to be stonebridge and scott, and while they're decent enough actors, its just not the same. Stonebridge and Scott's chemistry took the show to another , beyond the action and adrenaline. Also, the mission never seemed to have a focus like prior seasons. But to be honest, season finales hasn't always been this shows strong suit. Plenty of room to grow, but I do wish they brought back the old to join the new permanently to bring more personality to the show

Still great. Maybe not what it was between seasons 1 and 4, but def solid. Scott and Stonebridge return by end of season - if the writers are smart enough to use them correctly, and to never arbitrarily kill them off, season 6 could be spectacular. Watch it.

Always a thrill ride, very well made

Have watched all episodes Really enjoyed it. KEEP it coming. Love how the guys came back at the end to help out.

Restart of what was probably the best executed semi-authentic military action adventure on TV (and honestly big screen as well), no pressure. Unfortunately it looks like creators of Strike Back: Retribution took no clues from the original Strike Back's cook book. Where original had realistic feeling gunplay, Retribution has weak action where guns feel like toys with muzzle flashes added in post. Where original characters handled firearm with certain professionalism, Retribution feels like actors got their hands on weapons two minutes before shooting (hehe) started. When original characters broke the rules, it felt important and for a reason, in Retribution main protagonist nonchalantly wipes his butt with Geneva Conventions 15 minutes into first episode for no apparent reason. Firefights, one of the cornerstone of this series, look terribly bland. There is no way audience can keep track of what's happening, all the tactical movement makes no sense and so these action scenes end up being just a mess of random, incoherent shaky shots. Authenticity is not saved by overuse of military lingo to the point where it's comical. Seriously, you watch someone twisting their tongue to pronounce complicated sentence about "multiple tangos" where "multiple hostiles" would be easier to say, more understandable and more fitting. What's almost shocking is that I never considered original Strike Back to be a great piece of writing (and I didn't mind, that wasn't its purpose), but compared to Retribution it was damned Shakespeare. Retribution characters feel 2D and featureless. Two male protagonists are not exactly the same, but 80% of time I had to check whether the dude speaking is the one with the beard or the other one. Ladies are more distinct, but that's only because they are basically two walking tropes. This is partially salvaged by Alin Sumarwata's ability to pull of her character with grace and make her off-combat scenes fun. (Don't know how proficient she is in whatever language is used in the checkpoint scene, but that was seriously highlight of this show). Overall Strike Back: Retribution feels like a fanfilm and you'd honestly spend your time better by rewatching the original. It's great shame Cinemax wasn't able (or more likely willing) to bring same amount of attention into the restart of this quite legendary series.

Consistent action. Mostly believable weapons handling and tactics. The story line is typically convoluted as we have come to expect. High production values which allows military and action fans to enjoy the show without being distracted with implausible or poorly executed fight scenes. It's a great show and easily on par with the best in the genre.

Such a let down. Acting and stunt coordination was mediocre at best... Should have just stick to the 5 season and end this series. Recommend to watch other on-going alternatives such as Seal Team, The Brave, S.W.A.T instead of wasting time on this.
