Critic Reviews for Sunnyside Season 1

All Critics (11) | Top Critics (5)

Sunnyside (sort of) gets a closeup in this big-hearted sitcom. It's the sitcom part that's the problem, at least in Thursday's pilot.

It's still disappointing to see the young comedy flailing to figure itself out, a painful process "Dr. Potato" never finds a remedy for.

Sunnyside is painfully conservative, which is a shame.

Despite Modi's manic presentation, Sunnyside resembles nothing so much as a 30-minute public-service spot for Catholic Legal Services or some other pro-bono law firm.

Just like most shows produced by Schur, there are rapid-fire jokes and throwaway lines that are often funnier than the jokes, but the characters giving them are given an opportunity to not just be joke machines but full-formed characters.

Timeliness doesn't guarantee hilarity, and Penn's bland characterization of this jerk isn't helped by bouncing off the broad cultural stereotypes of his students.

Unfortunately, Sunnyside's preaching is so heavy-handed, it's unlikely even a left-wing choir will want to tune in to hear the mostly unfunny sermons.

As a depiction of activism and making change, the promising Sunnyside pilot makes a strong case that it begins with one's neighbors, and builds out a neighborhood well worth watching.

Sep 26, 2019 | Full Review…

The pilot has some of the loose rhythm of "Parks and Recreation" but not much of the cleverness. Garrett's shallowness is shallowly drawn, and the study group he reluctantly takes on feels like a holding cell of immigrant clichés.

If Sunnyside leans into spontaneity and surprises-just as Community quickly turned away from Britta and Jeff to focus on the most chemistry-laden couple on the show, Troy and Abed-then it could evolve into a show worth sticking with.

With his easy charm, smart script and diverse cast, [Kal] Penn may help the network deliver something that's been eluding it -- a comedy that's timely and winning.

Audience Reviews for Sunnyside: Season 1

Great to see a show with diversity, a current topic with comedic overtones, yet seems to stay clear of being political. I'm interested to see the characters develop. Seems like it could become a multicultural version of that old (but great) show Cheers. Kal Penn always delivers off-beat comedy with his matter of fact style.

It's a feel good comedy that deals with immigration and friendship. The episodes get funnier as the show finds its feet and the ensemble cast is really good. Definitely worth sticking around for.

Sooo bad. Unfunny. Seemed like it was from the 80's.

The pilot was good, but the second episode is super funny. Excited to see how it develops.

The show started out so stupid I stopped watching before the 1st commercial break.

Absolutely abysmal...there was nothing redeeming about it and I failed to laugh a single time, unfortunately. I will not be continuing with this one because it was a complete turnoff episode, and I am glad it did not wait to be so terrible so I was not invested when deciding to nix it from my weekly list.
