It seems the show has returned to its roots as an exploration of the challenges facing a working-class family that mostly avoids partisanship and values diversity. The humor is stilted and awkward at times, but its emotional core remains.

"The Conners" returns to remind us what primetime used to be. Producers Bruce Helford, Bruce Rasmussen, and Dave Caplan keep the "Roseanne" 90's format intact while still updating it for new viewers.

Altogether, these staples produce little flavor; maybe it's the lack of a shadow to emerge from, but "Preemies, Weed And Infidelity" is rarely ever more than just fine.

This season premiere was far from perfect, but it did what I expect of the show, it made me laugh out loud, shake my head, and sometimes yell at the screen.
