Critics Consensus

The English Game's love of the game is likely to illicit a rise out of fans, but tedious plotting stretched too thin may inspire others to riot.

It is the true joy of TV, [that] it delves you into a world that you think you wouldn't know anything about. This is one of those shows. Go to Full Review

There's plenty of fudging of the facts... But that's not the biggest failing of The English Game. Nor is the fact some of the relationship drama feels rather wooden and perfunctory. The biggest issue is that there's not enough of, well, the English game. Go to Full Review

The costume and production design is immersive, it's all quite gorgeously shot, and the whole stands alongside The Crown in showing that Netflix can get this stuff done every bit as well as the BBC. Go to Full Review

A well mounted, strongly acted and consistently watchable series. Go to Full Review

This is a series about football, which means they have to play football for long stretches of every episode. And yet somehow the show manages to make every game stereotypical and yet simultaneously tedious. Go to Full Review

You begin [the show] thinking that you're going to see something interesting about the origins of football in England and end up swallowing a cheesy and gimmicky melodrama without an iota of depth. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Shane K Jul 15 Very enjoyable series that you don't need to be a football fan to enjoy. Likeable well acted characters and great period costumes and sets. 5 stars. See more Noah C @noahcoad 08/23/2024 Greatly enjoyed the story, characters, setting, drama, and resolutions. Beautifully crafted. See more Oliver M 06/30/2024 Riddled with every leftie-infused period stereotype you can imagine, making it entirely predictable See more Mike D 02/08/2024 Absolutely superb. The best series I've watched in a while.Captivating and enthralling. See more Aaron R 02/05/2024 a wonderful and enjoyable miniseries! loved everything about it! See more Louise C 02/02/2024 Having enjoyed other Julian Fellowes' TV series, I opted to give 'The English Game' a viewing, and was not disappointed. It was much as I expected, except portions of this series dragged on a tad. Perhaps this was highlighted because I binge-watched the whole story in one afternoon. That said, the unfolding of the tale had some very exciting moments and a few touching scenes as well. Considering the relatively short length of time it takes to view the whole story, I was surprised to see marked character development in the major characters. Being based on the history of soccer made this more appealing, with follow-up facts given during the credits rolls. See more Read all reviews
