What to Know

Critics Consensus

Too much plot and not enough resolve let The One down, but its fun and flashy thrills may be enough to keep viewers entertained - at least for a little while.

You'd think "The One" would have all sorts of places to go, and yet it goes to few of them. Instead the show revolves around a murder that's neither mysterious or terribly plausible. Go to Full Review

In the grand scheme of Netflix original series, this one might linger in the memory for longer than expected, if only thanks to that premise - the power of a truly great "What if...?" Go to Full Review

It's a stylish show that will slip down easily enough on nights - and there are plenty of them - when you don't have the mental bandwidth for anything more demanding. Beyond that, I doubt The One is anyone's perfect match. Go to Full Review

A second season seems inevitable, given the show's ratings and Season 1's ending; here's hoping more time is spent on consistent characterization and narrative development. Go to Full Review

Christina H Sep 13 If you’ve read the book, I can all but guarantee that you, too, will hate this show. See more KellySue F 01/21/2025 Okay, I watched this in 2 days and was intrigued and it kept my interest. It had various threads with new information each episode to keep you into it. I came to loath the main character. Her emptiness is just the outcome of her selfish, ambitious ways. She has zero empathy and I kind of think she is part psycho path. Couldn't stand her. But enjoyed the other characters, esp. Hannah, Mark, and Kate's story lines. Would def. watch a season 2 if that ever happens... See more Vander A 11/16/2023 If you are in the mood for some light fare for whatever reason - can't take a drama, or a mega car chase flic, or a war movie, etc, etc., then this is the getaway vehicle for you, It's kind of like a prime time daily soap opera but a little better. If your mind needs a little vacation from any heavy thinking this will serve nicely. Although soap-operaish, if you don't take it too seriously it's mildly entertaining and all of the actors are reasonably good. The sci-fi premises is also interesting. See more mike m @mmx554 12/31/2022 A daft premise to base the whole series on, non-believable story lines, plot holes, unconvincing scenes; frankly, a complete mess of a series. See more 12/29/2021 I was hoping that this series would be a Sci-Fi drama, but it is actually a soap-opera with a Sci-Fi "coating". I watched the entire first season, even after realizing that it wasn't the type of series that I would normally watch. I have to admit that the acting, production values, and direction all make for a very slick production. The down side of the series for me is that it centers on four female characters that act irrationally. The lead female character is the only one whose motives and actions make any sense. The other three major female characters act as though they are addicted to a drug, rather than being affected by a dating app. The entire plot would do well as a daytime soap opera drama. Also, there are the tropes and memes currently popular with production companies that have a particular political agenda, and viewpoint. It is not one that I agree with, but I'm sure that there will be viewers that do. The only thing I really enjoyed, was listening to actress Lois Chimimba's great Scottish brogue. I also think her character is the most endearing in the series. I have to assume that there will be a second season of this series, but I won't watch it. See more tom m 12/29/2021 Okay. The premise is a bit hard to accept. The story was less about "The One" premise than about the drama over a murder investigation. See more Read all reviews
