The character at the heart of this story, self-centered and struggling with how his ambition is changing him, seems built for today's times.

The frantic attempts to get his vote are both depressingly realistic and comically rueful. Everything is seen from the voter's perspective and that's where The Politician, as a series, comes close to being a work of genius.

Though The Politician plays with the signifiers of progressivism...it continues to push the idea that the winners are the ones who repress or hide these politically unmarketable traits in order to gain power.

This series is a great big wall, dripping with ideas that have been flung at it without thought. It's a Rushmore-style satire framed in camp.

The performances are hit and miss, with some of the lead actors going big and broad and playing to the rafters, as if they're on stage in a cavernous auditorium. That's a risky and in more than a few cases not entirely successful choice for the medium.

A show like The Politician could only happen on Netflix, a streaming service whose motto might as well be, "Keep watching, it gets better." [Ryan] Murphy's brand and style fits that ethos incredibly well.

Where both Election and its source material took deadly aim, The Politician's great ambition far outweighs its clarity.

The Murphy playbook here feels exhausting, counterproductively unrealistic, and even downright fearful.

But despite its occasional flaws, "Politician" is a relief to watch, because it manages to make fiction stranger than life once more. That is no small achievement in 2019.

It's a daring show that reveals right from the start how wooden and obviously constructed its central character is.

A grab bag of genres and tone, but Platt, as billed, is special indeed.

It's another dazzling Murphy triumph. It has his trademark hurricane of a narrative that sweeps you up and deposits you breathless and agape somewhere else entirely an hour later.

This isn't a particularly great set of episodes, but it shows a lot of flair, and it may make you eager to see the next season, which seems almost guaranteed, given Netflix's huge deal with Murphy.

Highly watchable, as Payton's campaign repeatedly surmounts seemingly insurmountable problems, and, when bits of real feeling make it through all the acid humor, even touching.
September 26, 2019
The series has enough wit and visual style, though, that it's a pleasure to watch in the moment - just as long as you don't think beyond the moment.

It's a shiny but not especially bright bauble that falls short of a winning ticket.

So far, I can't figure out how I'm supposed to feel about anyone or anything, which makes it quite an achievement if this was the response they were going for. Although I'm honestly not sure it was.

Murphy & Co are at the peak of their powers, and their granular mastery of character and narrative enables them to toss in the kind of goofy curve-balls they need to keep things funny without their own singular spell.
September 25, 2019
It's enjoyable to watch, if only cosmetically and at a distance, and it's incredibly aesthetically pleasing.

Much like its hero's determination to win his high-school election, The Politician's presence on Netflix feels like the by-product of ambition and chutzpah rather than an urgent need to effect change or communicate meaningful ideas.
