Tv Season Info

Cable drama about Sheriff Harold Jensen (Martin Henderson) trying to keep peace in two worlds while policing the small New Jersey town in which he grew up and the nearby Native American settlement, where he finds himself crossing paths with Phillip Kopus (Jason Momoa), an ex-con and member of the tribe. At the same time, Jensen is dealing at home with an emotionally unstable wife (Julianne Nicholson). With the disappearance of a college student, both communities are on edge, and during the course of the investigation, secrets come to light that impact both the local townsfolk and the Native Americans. Later, Jensen becomes caught between the law and a compromise he entered into with Kopus, whose criminal activities have him involved in dealings with Albanian mobsters. In the season finale, a violent showdown pits the sheriff and the ex-con against the vicious, vengeful underworld hoods.

Critic Reviews for The Red Road Season 1

All Critics (27) | Top Critics (15)

The Red Road feels like it might play better as one giant movie than as something doled out week to week.

Feb 28, 2014 | Full Review…

From beginning to end, The Red Road lets Jason Momoa walk all over it, trampling any potential for conflict or spark. The best shows can dazzle us with strong characters. But strong characters can crush weak shows.

The deliberate pacing and slow revelation of key motivations and certain relationships don't make it easy on viewers, but you didn't tune in for "Law & Order: Mahwah."

It simply tells an engrossing story well, with a welcome lack of melodrama and self-aggrandizing and an appropriate level of violence.

The Red Road demands patience, but from what I've seen, it strongly suggests that will be rewarded.

Jason Momoa is going to surprise you in the engaging new SundanceTV drama The Red Road.

Mar 3, 2014 | Full Review…

Whether this finely acted slow-burner can unravel the exhausting amount of mysteries introduced in its pilot remains to be seen, but I'm looking forward to travelling down The Red Road.

Feb 27, 2014 | Rating: 7/10 | Full Review…

The Red Road doesn't play much catch-up for viewers, and one gets the sense that it won't be until the final episode of the series airs that everything makes sense. That's the type of storytelling people want in their TV series now.

Anyone anticipating the next Breaking Bad will have to keep waiting. This is an awfully dull detour.

Feb 27, 2014 | Full Review…

Mental illness is a tricky thing to portray on screen without seeming cheesey; The Red Road approach is very cheddar.

Feb 27, 2014 | Rating: C- | Full Review…

While The Red Road is gorgeous to look at, and the ideas behind it can be intriguing, it gets mired in attempts to string out what little plot is there over a six episode first season.

Audience Reviews for The Red Road: Season 1

  • Sep 13, 2019
The first episode was just ok but the 2nd drew me in. I couldn't wait every night to watch it. Second season was even better. I wish they would bring it back. There is so much more story to tell!!
  • Sep 09, 2019
It was great. Please bring back.

You can't top this. This is the most well-written, well thought-out, well produced, the best of everything is right here in this show. Entertaining every minute keeping you on the edge of your seat. It is so down to earth and so many well-thought-out rolls, even hilarious at times. The creators of this show should take over Hollywood, and teach them how it's done.
  • Dec 16, 2016
I love this show. I wish Netflix would pick it up and finish it. I wanna know what's going to happen to all of the characters.
  • Apr 16, 2015
Insipid, gratuitous and weird. But not good weird- just weird.
  • Jan 31, 2015
Solid performances and story lines. Suspenseful. Dramatic. Eager for a second season.
  • Apr 04, 2014
Despite great assembling cast, The Red Road failed to deliver its promise. The story is focusing on slow drama that pretty much a disappointment.
  • Mar 11, 2014
A confusing mess of Drama that never seems to actually go anywhere or make it worthwhile to watch.
