    Oof, that was Rotten.

    Meh, it passed the time.

    It’s good – I’d recommend it.

Critic Reviews for The Righteous Gemstones Season 1

All Critics (51) | Top Critics (17)

The Righteous Gemstones might be the funniest show currently on television, and it's certainly the funniest show I've ever seen about grief.

The show barely scratches the surface before reverting to a more conventional crime-dramedy mode. And so the familiarity of McBride's M.O. disheartens.

With that tight focus on these characters comes a need to differentiate them from similar characters we've seen before. That's the show's most significant flaw.

The Righteous Gemstones is uneven but solid and engaging; I'm already dying to know what happens next. In a way, it's reflective of the megachurches it skewers: It's so easy to find yourself dazzled and buy into it completely.

The Righteous Gemstones is hallelujah-worthy for its performances, energy, comedy, dramedy and occasional little heart tugs.

Distinctly uncomfortable to watch, and [reveals] a sad, surreal, and often funny truth about the American dream: to attain it, dreamers run the risk of blindly believing they're entitled to anything.

At its best, it's Succession with pews; at its worst, it's worth skipping.

The most compelling aspect of The Righteous Gemstones might be its reluctance to rub the viewer's nose in the apparent hypocrisy of its characters.

Bringing each character to their lowest point, and countering that with Aimee-Leigh's passing and the outrage over the bee is the perfect way to encapsulate the Gemstone family.

This show is like a bigger, flashier version of [Eastbound & Down]. It's big, loud and entertaining but as the season progresses it plays more and more with your expectations... revealing a depth you might not have initially anticipated.

Full of funny and original characters... The Righteous Gemstones aims and hits the mark by underlining the most absurd aspects of the intersection between faith and business. [Full Review in Spanish]

Walton Goggins was the secret weapon of The Righteous Gemstones in a role that combined Boyd Crowder from Justified and Lee Russell from Vice Principals.

Great, great, show. Danny McBride's best work, in my opinion. Plus, how can you deny Dan Goodman? Also, a real breakout performance by Edi Patterson. I'll be checking out what else she does with her career. Her relationship with her husband may have stolen the show for me. Good concept, good execution.

In the beggining, I raised my eyebrow to the leading characters. If they are so unlikeable, how am I supposed to like this? Turns out the show finds a way to humanize its characters just enough for the show to feel fun and wild.

This show was fantastic! Hilarious in parts, yet some great emotional parts as well that really touch home. Was raised religious, but no longer am. Think from either side of that spectrum there are great parts of this show to enjoy.

Danny McBride and the cast overall are absolutely hysterical. Dialogue is fantastic and acting solid. There were times when I wondered how could they keep a straight face... Would love to see the bloopers.

Laugh-out-loud comedy with a surprisingly irresistible plot. Danny McBride and company are at their best with this irreverent jaunt.

This is some driving television! Not at all what I expected, thought it was going to be more of a parody of super churches, but this more about the unrighteous doings that go on behind it. Aimee-Leigh episode is a favorite, for sure.

    Incredibly funny. Relevant

If you believe a person can be twice run over by a Range Rover and can still be alive, never mind up and walking around the next day, then you have the intellect required for Danny McBrides writing. Seriously, the dialog is okay but the overarching plot points are ham handed and not very believable and it ruins the entire series because you don't know what disbelief you're next going to be asked to suspend. Little hard to enjoy it when I keep saying 'Oh, come on!' He's trying to walk a fine line between reality and parody and it falls flat.
