I think it is one of the most misunderstood movies of all time. People complain the characters are strange/ too stiff. But I don't think that's a mistake. They aren't meant to be perfectly naturalistic but more like stylized archetypes. If you approach the movie expecting realism, it's going to feel off. Its not meant to be! The central concept is unique, terrifying, and probably not that far off (but more likely fungus than plants!). Humanity is at the whim of mother nature and we're arrogant to her power. The strange or quirky tone isn't a flaw, it's literally part of the experience. The actors deserve more credit than they get too. They are criticized for their delivery but I believe they gave exactly the performances the film is asking for - it's a stylistic choice that landed wonderfully for me but not for most i guess :( See more Ryan C. @RT93572724 May 23 Even with all the low ratings, this is still one of my favorite MNS movies. If I could get it negative stars I would but that still would not be enough to describe just how awful this movie was. This movie made me think Mark Walhburg has never acted a day in his life and you would have thought Zooey Deschanel was being held at gunpoint to be part of this movie. I have seen and loved so many of m knight Shyamalan’s movies but this ? This you would have thought he was on a 37$ budget and wrote and produced this in 48 hours tops. I mean the idea of the planet fighting back was good but it was executed horribly. Thanks to this trainwreck of a film I can never watch anything with joey deschannel again. Won't even attempt it. As for the rest nobody's acting was even slightly good. The director should have been slapped silly too.
