Well-respected businessman Earl Brooks (Kevin Costner) has a secret: Beneath his family-man facade lurks a murderous alter-ego named Marshall (William Hurt). Brooks struggles with his addiction to killing, but Marshall enjoys his grisly hobby too much to let go. The good news: there are many twists, turns, subplots and surprises that the coming attractions don't even hint at. Kevin Costner is convincing in a 'baddie' role for a change and William Hurt clearly revelled in playing his alter ego. It added interest to intertwine the detective's legal problems with the main plot instead of it just being a side plot. Great ending. Surprisingly slow, the movie's two-hour runtime is really felt, as the narrative meanders and struggles to build genuine tension or engage the viewer. Overall, what could have been a compelling psychological thriller ends up feeling like a sluggish, squandered opportunity.
