On a sea voyage to transport breadfruit to Jamaica, English Captain Bligh (Trevor Howard) abuses his crew and officers enough to anger his 1st Lieutenant, Fletcher Christian (Marlon Brando). When they reach their destination, tensions ease and the crew luxuriates in island life until Bligh claps several men in irons for trying to desert. On the trip home, further indignities inspire Christian to stage a mutiny and set Bligh and those loyal to him afloat in a row boat.

Brando makes a total mess of his English accent, the romantic interlude in Tahiti goes on endlessly, and the visuals (perhaps the main point of interest in the movie) too often resort to travelogue vistas and picture postcard lighting.

MGM spent some $20,000,000 on the film. They could have saved most of it and had a better picture by sticking to the Bligh-Christian conflict and omitting the Spectacular Clutter.

Marlon Brando is phenomenal as the out-upon Fletcher Christian, driven to mutiny by an increasingly punitive and unfeeling captain Bligh.

A bloated and meandering mess. Each sequence is barely hiding the numerous behind the scenes tensions. Most fixate on Brando's accent (its certainly a choice!) but few point out the multiple hard cuts to him mincing around in weird little outfits even when something serious is happening.

Perhaps even better than the original, which says a lot. It's 50/50, but just as wonderful scenery, acting, and musical score all make you feel like you're on the shores of Tahiti 200+ years ago.

Beautifully photgraphed with Brando in top form. Thoroughly engaging saga of the sea, the three hours sails by. The story pits a foppish first mate [Brando] against a sado-masochitic captain supported by the naval code of conduct of ship's officers and their captain. On a symbolic level, the BOUNTY is the world in which absolute authority can be so oppressive that even a well-bred gentleman and officer must fight violence with violence. SPOILER ALERT! the gentleman loses.

Synopsis
