In 1918, 18-year-old Ernest Hemingway signs up for service in World War I. After a bomb goes off on the front line, filling his leg with shrapnel, Hemingway is transported to a hospital, where he begs Dr. Domenico Caracciolo not to amputate. Under the care of 26-year-old Austrian nurse Agnes von Kurowsky, Hemingway slowly recovers. The two begin an affair, but Agnes is torn between the immature young man and the more stable Caracciolo.

In Love and War is at its best photographing stationary objects, such as architecture, trees and bedridden soldiers -- not exactly what one hopes for from a movie portraying such a vital force as Ernest Hemingway.

In Love and War is not much interested in Ernest Hemingway's subsequent life and career, and even in its treatment of this early period, it doesn't deal with themes such as his macho posturing, his need to prove himself, his grandiosity.

This happens to be my favourite film of all time. I know it's not trendy to like romance or heartbreak but here we are. Sandra Bullock's most beautifully restrained performance - and who wouldn't cry at the love scene or the last sequence at the lake? Ignore the critics, this is a classic for all romantics.

Bullock is consistently great. O'Donnell is consistently bland. If this had a better script, like O'Donnell's Scent of a Woman, then it could have raised the limited abilities of Chris O'Donnell, but instead we got this. Unless you're a big huge fan of 1990s period melodrama, then skip this one.
