A film director gathers his favorite actresses, those he worked with and those he loved. He wants to make a film about women but he doesn't reveal much: he observes them, takes cue, until his imaginary throw them into another era, in a past where the noise of the sewing machines fills a workplace handled and populated by women, where men have minor and marginal roles and cinema can be told from another point of view: the one of costume. Between loneliness, passions, anxieties, heartbreaking absence and unbreakable bonds, reality and fiction permeate, as well as the lives of the actresses and those of the characters, the competition and the sisterhood, the visible and the invisible.

If you manage to turn off your brain a little and scoff at the director’s delusions of grandeur, Diamanti is a feast. Go to Full Review

The film runs for 135 minutes, but the script is so breathless it never feels draggy and Özpetek gets excellent results with his stacked cast. Go to Full Review

Formulaic, cheesy, and unexciting on every front, Diamonds explores the behind-the-scenes world of cinema in a soap-opera-like fashion that feels both predictable and uninspired. Go to Full Review

I just didn’t see the need to break the verisimilitude of such a rich main narrative with constant pullbacks of the curtain. However, when the true purpose of the self-referential parts comes to light, it is pure cinema magic. Go to Full Review

Diamanti is a fine piece of ensemble acting. But Özpetek’s appearance in the last scene is self-indulgent and unwelcome - he should have left the final word to the vaginodrome. Go to Full Review
Rich Cline Shadows on the Wall Apr 16

From its meta-framing device and referential sight gags to warmly involving personal connections, this is pure cinematic joy, nodding to specific classic movies while celebrating the fine art of costume design. Go to Full Review

Stephen C @bob25009 6d Funny in 2.25 hours. See more Cinephile B @runa.r 05/23/2025 It’s a good, well-structured film that’s enjoyable to watch. However, it touches on a theme that’s already been explored to some extent — that of a haute couture atelier, marked by a high level of pressure and exacting standards among the team working there.
