What to Know

Critics Consensus

Marrying a clever spin on the afterlife with an infectious sweet streak, Eternity is a spiritual successor to classic romantic screwball comedies that's worthy of their company.

Audience Says

An original high concept and a compelling love triangle are the particles of Eternity -- a charming Rom-Com that’s worth the price of admission.

It made me giggle quite a lot, watching this movie. Da'Vine Joy Randolph -- put her in any movie you want, and we're going to be fine. Go to Full Review

One ends up longing for a sniff of reality. But the three leads demonstrate absolute belief in romantic absolutes as we drift towards a class of sob-heavy denouement Hollywood now rarely attempts. Go to Full Review

The film is fantastical yet grounded in moving truths, warm and heart tugging and laugh-out-loud witty. You exit its world with a glow of satisfaction. Go to Full Review

The more time goes by, the more I find myself bristling at its simultaneous ambition and cowardice. Its premise skirts over the rich dramatic possibilities, placating the audience and itself with its conflict-avoidance. Go to Full Review

An interesting yet not really intriguing mix of love triangle romcom and a fantasy premise that ends up feeling too common in spite of the gamble in concept. Plays like a dry and mundane version of a Gondry film. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

I enjoyed this absurdist romantic comedy. Miles Teller and Elizabeth Olsen both give great performances, and the script is both clever and imaginative, with its unique twist on a romantic triangle plot. Go to Full Review

BRENT SIMON Jun 14 Not bad, but not as good as I'd hoped. See more Karalyn May 10 Cute but dragged on a bit See more Celluloid Hero May 9 Talk about getting it wrong. Reading reviews of Eternity from movie critics and the audience makes you wonder if we're living in one of those Marvel alternate universes. I actually watched this movie again just to see if my initial reaction and observations were correct. C'mon folks. There's nothing "rom-com" about this film. It's actually one of the most cynical and depressing takes on true love and long-term marriage you'll ever see. It's a perfect example of Hollywood's distorted perception of reality. Because the filmmakers are operating from a Hollywood framework, they confuse high-stakes drama with emotional truth. They believed that the only way to prove Larrys value was to let Joan taste the alternative and reject it. In doing so, they destroyed the very thing they were trying to protect. For an audience that understands real commitment, a truly profound love story would have shown Joan looking at Luke, acknowledging the brief beauty of what they had, and then turning to Larry without a single shred of hesitation. By making her leave Larry first, the movie proves that Hollywood often struggles to visualize a love that is driven by honor and history rather than immediate, selfish gratification. Of course, if she originally chose Larry, it would be a movie without tension and mystery. Still, it doesn't matter that Joan comes running back to Larry after her eternity with Luke doesn't live up to her expectations. The damage is done. Her initial decision to go with Luke is the ultimate rejection of Larry. And while Larry gives his approval, it's still Joan's decision, making it a betrayal of the lifetime they spent together. Joan gets a free pass while Luke is abandoned to spend eternity alone and Larry goes into eternity on the run as a fugitive with a woman who viewed him as a "consolation prize" only to return when she regrets her initial decision because her temptation and excitement wore off after realizing how shallow and "cold" her eternity would be with Luke. Somehow, an eternity of cabin sex, skiing, hiking, and parties wasn't so appealing. As frustrating, annoying, and insulting the film is in it's treatment of something that should be cherished, it's bewildering to read reviews that appear to be oblivious to the movie's underlying theme. And for those Millennials and Gen Z ers who disagree, think about Grandma abandoning Grandpa in eternity to get it on with her first love. Hmm? Get it now.
