FATHER MOTHER SISTER BROTHER is a feature film, though carefully constructed in the form of a triptych. The three stories all concern the relationships between adult children, their somewhat distant parent (or parents), and each other. Each of the three chapters takes place in the present, and each in a different country.

Critics Consensus

Father Mother Sister Brother is a subtly haunting, wryly funny, and visually poised triptych that transforms the banal awkwardness of family life into a bittersweet meditation on the bonds that persist.

In "Father Mother Sister Brother," veteran filmmaker Jim Jarmusch delivers a warm story of family and all its inescapable quirks. Go to Full Review

3.5/4
What connects these tales isn’t narrative propulsion but pulse. Jarmusch is patiently attuned to people trying, and largely failing, to bridge the small emotional gaps that can turn into chasms. Go to Full Review

It’s bittersweet, sometimes tragic, yet a deep warmth prevails. With minimal dialogue, Jarmusch articulates what most families never dare to. Go to Full Review
John Serba Decider Mar 2
Of course, Jarmusch avoids any emotion that’s too grand or melodramatic – closure ain’t his thing. Whether you’re moved by Father Mother Sister Brother or merely puzzled by the filmmaker’s rumination on the ties that bind depends on your own baggage. Go to Full Review

Once you settle into Father Mother Sister Brother‘s relaxed groove and get accustomed to the variations on the theme, there’s an easygoing allure to Jarmusch’s associative approach, as there so often is. Go to Full Review

Mike Jan 17 If you like Jim Jarmusch’s overall directing style and pacing you’ll like this movie. Very strong cast and vignettes that make a welcome alternative to the gory tentpoles splattering across screens right now. See more Brett K Jan 16 Back to classic Jarmusch. Three vignettes all dealing with family dynamics, warts and all. See more Ghederick Eshmont Jan 11 A brilliant, slow burn slice of life & family with impeccable acting See more Facebook U Jan 9 Nice movie with characters that we never really got to know. It was literally like visiting with 3 separate families to observe how they get along with no background or interaction. See more Justin Jan 9 I hate to writing negative reviews but this movie was so disappointing. First off I'm a fan of the director Jim Jarmusch. I loved most of his previous films with some of my favorites being Patterson, Broken Flowers, and Mystery Train. I can usually find something in all of his movies to enjoy but this is the first time I can honestly say that watching one of his movies felt like a complete waste of my time. "Father Mother Sister Brother" is the most boring movie I've ever seen in theaters. It was like watching paint dry. Honestly there wasn't a single thing I enjoyed about this film. I would only recommend this to fans of Jim Jarmusch and even then I'd go in with low expectations. See more Blake D @RT55286378 13h Please God, please give me these two hours of my life back. Please. I'm beseeching you. I truly believe this was the most boring movie I've ever watched. Ever. Deep dive into family dynamics? No. At the risk of being obvious, a lot of kids drift away from their parents when the parents get old. We don't need a movie to learn this. Slow Burn? Not at all. This is a euphemism for horribly boring film with nothing to say. The mysterious connection between the three stories? Kids going by on skateboards in the early scene of each story. Then you see a Rolex watch owned by one of each scene's main characters (so deep!). And the color red. AYKM? Seriously? We tend to give bad movies a pass by saying they are "artsy". You've been warned. See more Read all reviews
