First-time filmmaker Kiyoko seems content to honor teen romance conventions in a more or less by-the-book tale of first love that has been through enough permutations to feel vaguely workshopped. Still, she's gotten engaging performances from her leads. Go to Full Review

I absolutely loved the nostalgic feel of the movie. Go to Full Review

Mostly, “Girls Like Girls” wins us over with a singular type of first-film assuredness: a familiar story presented as the most personal reveal ever. Go to Full Review

Kiyoko's directorial debut is a tender coming-out drama about a young woman who falls in love for the first time after a heartbreaking loss. Go to Full Review

Where Girls Like Girls stumbles is in its loftier emotional goals. It can’t reach the true heart-wrenching drama it seeks to extract from Coley’s familial tragedy nor her pain with the middle chapter of this relationship. Go to Full Review

Girls Like Girls is a familiar plot, which is part of the point. It's a grounded love story that isn't afraid to make characters messy or deal with trickier subjects, largely executing a painfully realistic story with a good sense of craft. Go to Full Review

alli 34m if ur gonna have an overused plot, at least write it well See more jesse v 17h it started out as a great slice of life movie but the pacing went all over the place. it felt like a whole tv season but we lost half the episodes and filled in time with landscaping shots and more shots of the two girls. damn shame cause the acting is great. See more Brittney 17h Best movie weve ever watched. Filled my childhood with joy. Cant wait to buy the movie in person!! See more Madi 1d Beautiful, visually stunning, almost made me cry. You feel totally immersed as if you were one of them. Its so incredibly moving and entertaining at every turn. Never a lackluster moment. See more Lori 1d A bit slow paced, but an honest and emotional gay movie that we desperately need and have needed for a long time. I was completely invested in Coley's story and the real, raw, emotions she was dealing with both in her feelings for Sonya and losing her mom. Less about the coming out itself and more about the investment and connection with another person who happens to be the same gender and ultimately falling for them. There was no difference between watching this and a straight romance except it happened to be gay, which is exactly how queer stories should be portrayed. In all of its queerness, this is a movie for queers by queers and hopefully something we'll continue to see. And for the love of Lesbian Jesus, STAY FOR THE POST CREDITS! See more Kami 1d Great story. My only comment is that I would have liked a bit more of the coming out experience from the women. See more Read all reviews
