This is not a horror film; in fact, the unsettling feeling of the first half of the film is entirely squandered by the end. Nor is it "symbolic", or an exploration of existentialism or whatever. I've read a few interpretations of the film (it's troubling that there are several) and I can't agree with any of them; as everything is told from Jessie Buckley's character's viewpoint, she can't be imaginary and the whole thing can't be a dream, or at least not if it's dreamt by someone else. Just not buying it, sorry. What, then, does it mean? Goodness knows, but the end of the film is essentially like the ending of 2001: A Space Odyssey; it is foolish, incoherent and a complete let down. I kept waiting for the plot to be about Alzheimer or losing your memory, or some mental illness that distorts time and reality or something. It did not come. And if it did, it was not obvious. If you like movies where you feel like you may be losing your mind, or being on drugs, then this is for you. I am not one of those people. Altogether rivaling the past, present, and future of potential outcomes based solely on the reaction of the main characters. All in all I thought it was a great piece of work challenging the audience to believe in love and its length of persistence required. The second it started with the girlfriend in the car rambling through nonstop inner dialogue, I knew I was in trouble. It’s not clever or groundbreaking, it just tries way too hard to be deep and ends up feeling pretentious and boring. I couldn’t even finish it.
