Critics Consensus

A love-it-or-hate-it experience, Moulin Rouge is all style, all giddy, over-the-top spectacle. But it's also daring in its vision and wildly original.

Moulin Rouge is an audacious, snappy visual and emotional feast of dishes both familiar and fresh. Go to Full Review

Kidman and McGregor sparkle together; some songs enchant, a fine supporting cast give us some laughs, but it's not enough. There is nothing to savour, to reflect on. It's a film where style is in search of an idea. Go to Full Review

Ultimately, the human component of Moulin Rouge is dwarfed by director Luhrmann's outlandish visuals and virtuoso use of music. It's unlikely that any other film this year will offer such a feast for the senses. Go to Full Review

The story is filled with heartache, romance, jealousy and life...while some of it gets a little dull in the middle, overall it’s Luhrmann at his best. Go to Full Review

The film is unassailable and impenetrable; it is triumphantly indignant and courageously simplistic. Go to Full Review

Their simplicity is dull and repetitive. The story reinforces stereotypes, while supposedly breaking the status quo of the early 20th century, not only offering the audience à romanticized illusion of a life that retains us from progress, but also reducing our actual progress. It’s another fairy-tale that pretends to tell us about love and freedom, while it actually ties us to a dream and a moral compass that incarcerates us by not taking account of our differences. It’s the kind of movie that reinforces the morality that feeds the unfair system we live in. It’s incredibly superficial, dull, and repetitive. The pure entertainment was appreciatively shared by the entire audience. Ok, Nicole and Ewan are not the world’s best singers, but they do well enough in this spectacular spectacular (pardon the pun). The visual staging of the entire production is a true Masterclass. One of my all-time favourites. Still wonder whether Kylie Minogue would have been better cast in the lead role? See more Read all reviews
