01/06/2012 engaging script! love it See more 07/10/2011 Fred Vargas' book was a thrilling experience because the writer knew how to set the scene and how to convey a strong sense of anxiety by carefully chosen words. The adaptation of the book fails in many ways because, in my opinion, it forgets that it is a movie and, as such, should be sufficient on its own. I think, the changes to the plot and characters notwithstanding, that the moviemakers relied on the fact that the audience would have already read the book. This mistake reminded me constantly that I was watching a movie based on a book, and not a very good one at that either. The characters are not developed enough and the plot seems stunted. Although not the worst movie I have seen, there is too much room for improvement to make it worth the 116 minutes runtime. See more 07/01/2011 The book is fantastic and the movie could have been really great too as the story is quite thrilling. Unfortunately, poor dialogs lower our expectations. A shame. See more 08/15/2009 2.5: The kind of French film I wouldn't normally get to see (I had it shipped from amazon.fr on Blu-Ray). It's definitely not necessarily made for export. It's an odd and kind of winding story. It doesn't head where one expects at all. I'd give the first couple acts a higher rating than the last third. I almost gave it a 2 overall. Old fashioned revenge and lust for money just aren't as interesting as someone that was actually targeting random individuals with the plague. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing more films purportedly about the black death. Interesting characters and a nice look at many places I've been in Paris, as well as many I haven't seen before.
