Critics Consensus

A visually tacky sequel that lumbers along with a plodding pulse and lacking the thematic resonance that distinguished its source material, Return to Silent Hill gets lost in the haze.

Without any of the game’s tension-releasing exploration and puzzle-solving breaks, it has a nightmare flow, constantly upending its own logic and the geometry of its spaces. Go to Full Review

JB 1d Horrible movie: poor acting and storyline See more Pablo 1d I have no problems with this movie taking creative liberties that change certain things from the source material. I understand the idea of changing things to simplify the video game story, as they only have two hours to tell the story. But these changes in striving to link everything to James and Mary’s story make it incomprehensible and bloated. I did not come to this movie hating it, and I wouldn’t say I left hating it either. I am just incredibly disappointed. This movie started out decent with its first act, was genuinely excited to see what would go on, and also loved that title card. However, once James gets to the apartments, the whole story turns into a crazy tirade of things going on. The addition of having the cult (guising this is the order) part of Mary’s life made it unnecessarily complicated. It removed the focus of James and Mary’s relationship, which is the main reason James is in Silent Hill. Don’t even get me started with Eddie they should’ve just written him out since he was unneeded in this movie. I couldn’t name one thing that excuses his existence in the movie. Laura was at first interesting, but the reveal that she is a variant/manifestation of Mary was so rushed, and I literally laughed. That is this movie’s biggest problem: it didn’t let the moments breathe. The pacing in the first act wasn’t bad, but once the second and third acts hit, the movie begins to feel like a fever dream in which the mind makes up most of the rest. To give this movie credit, Hannah Emily Anderson, who plays Mary, Maria, and Angela, is the best part/actor in this film. She is genuinely good and plays all parts pretty well. Even if you disagree with the changes made to these characters, she does a good job of differentiating and adding elements to Mary. I wish her “variants” got more time to breathe. Maria is barely in this, and so is Angela. Again, I’m not saying making these characters manifestations doesn’t work, but it’s so rushed and doesn’t have time to breathe that it makes is laughably bad. There were 2 times I laughed out loud for how bad things were going. I liked the idea of having flashbacks to James and Mary’s lives, but once the cult was added into it, it became distracting and would effectively ruin the pacing and the action of the story. The soundtrack is another great part of this film Akira Yamaoka can do no wrong. New additions and old callbacks to the soundtrack added some great things to this movie I just wish the movie could follow up with them. Cinematography was also pretty good, especially the camera movements. But sometimes the effects looked pretty good, looking like dog shit. Creature designs were awesome, but that’s it. Liked the new design of the laying figures to make it more female. Nurses were disappointed. Pyramid Head could’ve been cool, making him and James connected, but it’s so in your face about it that it makes it laughablel Again, there are parts of this movie that are decent, even maybe good if you really look into it, but that does not save this movie’s bloated story and rushed story elements. We need to stop being afraid to go over 2 hours this movie needed that. This feels, and most likely i,s an unfinished movie. What a shame, still not the worst Silent Hill movie, that goes to Revelations… See more Arson 2d Loved this allot more than the new remake with those atrocious DEI re-designs. See more Mr Hollywood 5d Horrible. It’s boring and ridiculous. It’s a remake or reboot. Whatever it is it’s just not a good movie See more Jacob 6d If youre a fan of the game that this movie was based off of, maybe skip this one and even if you can look past the butchering of what was already a solid story, and are just a general horror or Silent Hill fan, this movie is still an ugly, poorly written CGI mess. It kind of feels like they told an AI to make a movie based off Silent Hill 2 and this is what it spat out. See more Tyler 6d It was an all right movie not the best not the worst had some cool looking cgi moments but then it seems like they kind of went on their own tangent towards the end See more Read all reviews
