Three decades ago, the Rose of Nevada vanished at sea, along with its crew. Now, it has returned. In a remote fishing village, its reappearance is embraced as an auspicious sign, with the local citizens convinced the luck of their economically devastated community may turn, if only the ship sails again. Joining the crew is Nick (George MacKay), desperate to provide for his young family, and Liam (Callum Turner), a mysterious drifter eager to escape his past. After a successful voyage, they return to harbor, only to find that nothing is as they remember it. Shooting on a 16mm Bolex camera and constructing all the sound in post, Mark Jenkin writes, directs, edits and scores a haunting and hallucinatory time-travel mystery that further solidifies him as one of the most distinct, singular artists working in film today. Jenkin conducts a cinematic séance, conjuring a portal into another world that forces us to confront the past and our relationship to it.

The result is a film that is haunting and singular – a furnace-blast of the past reshaped and refashioned for our modern times. All aboard. Go to Full Review

As a story of time and tide waiting for no man, “Rose of Nevada” is haunting, bittersweet, and a little scary. As a filmed object, it’s even more fascinating. Go to Full Review

One of the filmmaker’s greatest strengths is that he never explicitly voices what he’s saying, leaving audiences to ponder what they would do if their realities were cast adrift and lost at sea. Yes, it’s heady stuff. Go to Full Review

If the idea of an art-house time travel movie tickles your fancy, then hop aboard the Rose of Nevada, where two down-on-their-luck men take jobs on a ship that returns to harbour 30 years in the past. Sad and thoughtful. Go to Full Review

Mr Hollywood 1d The visuals help bring us into the story. The 16mm look works here. A film about time and place that evokes the past look of films and tv specials, to tell the story of time gone and returned. See more Bill A @Slash1964 3d great scenery, but story and character development was disappointingly simple. left feeling short changed.... See more Ari J @AriLovesMovies 3d Really interesting film. That’s a big compliment from me because so many new films are a retread of something else. I do recommend a watch (in theater if possible, because the cinematography is lovely and a big screen will show that off). I don’t want to say much about the plot, because for this film it’s better going in cold. It’s set in modern times, about people living in a seaside village in Cornwall. I felt the beginning was more deliberate than it needed to be, but OTOH it did give us a chance to figure out the players. Mostly, I was engrossed & entertained throughout. My one real complaint was the ending, which I felt was rushed and didn’t give you time to sit with it. It was also a bit unclear to my companion. I thought it would have been improved by just a couple more lines of dialogue. I had a real urge to replay the final 5 minutes just to be sure I got it right. Mostly a great film experience though. Give “Rose of Nevada” a whirl! I don’t think you’ll regret it. See more Edith G @RT39873252 Jun 29 It was not captivating. The only thing that was captivating was George and Callum sexy selves. I am going to watch it again, not because it was good but because I am trying to figure out what imagery Mark Jenkin used in order to intuitively tell the story. He could have just told the story. I like the concept of the story regardless. See more Roy J Jun 29 Sound design and visual aesthetics were impressive. Confusing at first but then the time travel mixed with human drama eventually became compelling. See more Wayne M @Wayne93 Jun 23 Rose of Nevada is a strange and mysterious film. A film about place and time. It's unique and intuitive. A small Cornish fishing village is in economic decline. 30 years ago it was thriving until a fishing boat, Rose of Nevada, went missing. Now it has strangely returned. Nick has a small family and needs money. Liam is an intinerant worker and looking for work. Together they work on the boat, alongside captain Murgey, to gain some fortune. All seems well, until they return and find they have gone back in time 30 years. Their lives are turned upside down, which Liam embraces but not Nick. They continue to fish but continue to stay back in time. The film is very evocative and is all about time and dealing with tragedy. It works very well in displaying the various periods of time. It has a great cast, headed by George MacKay and Callum Turner. Director Mark Jenkin makes uniquely British films, which he has done again here. See more Read all reviews
