In a not-so-distant dystopian future where the government sends seniors to isolated colonies under the guise of boosting the economy, 77-year-old Tereza (Denise Weinberg) decides her story is far from over. Refusing to surrender her independence, she embarks on a journey to pursue the dreams she is not yet ready to abandon. Along the way, she discovers freedom, companionship, and the joys of going wherever the river takes her. Winner of the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival, the latest from director Gabriel Mascaro (Neon Bull, Divine Love) is an inspiring reminder that it's never too late to take flight.

Critics Consensus

Finding dignity and fresh beginnings in old age, The Blue Trail is a scrappy adventure that elevates its modest production value with ample doses of imagination.

Mascaro’s film charts a unique course itself and does so in under 90 minutes. Mascaro is in full control as is his main star for a triumph about overcoming the odds and fighting back against a culture that wants to throw the elderly overboard. Go to Full Review

It’s oddly abrupt in its conclusion, but this weird and defiantly original picture is quite a trip. Go to Full Review

The script, written by the director and Tibério Azul, occasionally fumbles its dystopian framework. But the journey has enough vigour, underpinned by ideas on autonomy and ageing, to sustain its adventure. Go to Full Review

[An] amazing, captivating, exciting, and authentically beautiful film about an endearing character you just want to see succeed in his quest to break the system, fulfill his dream, and be happy. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

H H May 1 Thoroughly enjoyable. Unpredictable. Funny. Thought-provoking. Visually beautiful. Fluid direction. A charming dystopian tale. Highly recommended. See more Marcela Apr 25 Amazing photography WO See more MB C @MB.Cinema 23h When Teresa is forced to abandon her life under a harsh law targeting the elderly, she escapes on a journey of survival and self-discovery. The film begins with a powerful and thought provoking premise, a system that measures human worth by productivity. Its emotional core is carried by a sincere and layered central performance. However, the narrative becomes fragmented in the second half, losing some of its dramatic focus. A poetic and heartfelt journey that stumbles in structure but lingers in meaning. This is a very visual film set along a Brazilian river, acted brilliantly by the main actor, but also featuring the ongoing characters of life's adventure, taking risks, and trusting where life's coursing river will take you if you let yourself ride its boat. Some may find the film slow, but this is a great work of art which you must settle in and similarly trust where it will take you to be caught in its spell. See more Stephen C @bob25009 Apr 3 Success in 1 hour and 26 minutes. See more Read all reviews
