There are worse ways to kill an hour and a half or so, but you're not going to remember this movie next week or probably even tomorrow. I probably wouldn't have bothered with it if Paul Walker and Laurence Fishbourne weren't part of the cast, but it's far from their best roles. If you like running from one random shoot-out to another with characters the depth of a puddle and a plot like a connect-the-dots puzzle, then this movie is for you. Keep the volume low and you can miss all the dialogue that sounds like it was written by a 6th-grader while the gunshots will still blow your ears out(thanks sound mixer.) Instead, it leans more toward a desert-set crime story, filled with gangs, double-crosses, and gritty underworld politics. While the concept has potential, the execution leaves much to be desired. Paul Walker, as always, brings his natural charisma to the screen. He plays the role with the cool confidence and physicality that made him such a beloved star, and at times, his performance single-handedly carries the film. Unfortunately, the writing and pacing drag the story down. The film’s structure feels overly messy—there are too many unnecessary flashbacks, confusing shifts in perspective, and gaps in the timeline that make you feel like you’re missing key parts of the plot. Instead of building tension, the constant back-and-forth storytelling creates a sense of frustration. The setting in the desert has a unique, almost neo-western vibe, which could have worked in the film’s favor if the script had been tighter. There are a few moments of intensity where you think, “Okay, this could turn into something special,” but those moments never fully land. By the time the movie tries to ramp up its action, it’s too late—you’ve already disconnected from the story. While Paul Walker does his best to elevate the material, Bobby Z ultimately feels like a forgettable entry in his career. It’s not unwatchable, but it’s not memorable either.
